Unhappy Injector Pump?

Well today as I was driving down the road at 55 mph the truck felt like the throttle dies, and I was dragging an anchor down the road. The accel pedal was dead, until it was close to being floored then it would down shift from overdrive and run fine. It seems to repeat this when cruising between 50-60 in OD. The over head console also reads some crazy MPG figures like 60-70, then it will go back to normal. So sould I be ready to fork out some $$$ for a new VP-44? If so, anyone who has sources or had one replaced I would like some ball park prices. Truck runs fine at all other speeds, and has no power loss except at the 50-60 range. I do not have FP gauge....I know I should. Truck has codes 1693 and the infamous 0216.
Thanks, Rick

The codes are for the VP but the symptoms are not. I would keep looking if I were you. I don't know anything about Auto Trannies but I would bemore inclined to look in that direction. Have the codes cleared and see if they come back, they might be old codes left over from something else.

I have disconnected the batteries and have the head light switch on the speed up the power drain, I figure I would reset the APPS and see where that got me. I assume this will clear the codes, if not somebody please send me in the right direction. I agree though, I am not 100% sold that the inj pump is shot yet. Thanks Rick

Reset the APPS last night, started truck this morning and drove it about 10 miles trying to duplicate yesterday's behavior. Truck acted completely normal, but after returning still showed codes 1693 and 0216. I don't know if the codes were reset by the APPS proceedure. Looking to drop the truck off w/ Cummins on Monday if needed as I'm supposed to take off for Memorial day weekend with the trailer and family, so and ideas are appreciated. Thanks

Well RLee.......You sounded like me 3 months ago. I have an 02 HO 6sp and had a similar issue like yours. I would sometimes shift in 3rd gear, hit the gas pedal, and then nothing. It was intermittent of course, put I pulled the codes and found the same as you. The dreaded 0216 and 1693. Since my truck was still under warranty, I took it into the dealer and they confirmed my suspicion. A failed lift pump and failed VP44. I got them both replaced under warranty but they installed the in-tank pump on me. With the in-tank pump, I am only getting 8psi at idle and I can bring it down to almost 0psi at WOT. Pretty sad if you ask me. I bought a couple of stock lift pumps from cummins (one for a backup) and plan on installing the stock lift pump back in the original location along with the in-tank pump. I hope this combo works well so I can get some reliablity back in this poorly designed fuel system.

In any case, I would be prepared for the worst. It sounds as if your VP-44 is on the fritz.

Rebuilt pump will run around $1100 and the installation should run around $200-$300. Now this is not from a dealer, this would be from an independent mechanic.

Got the truck back yesterday from the dealer, they replaced the LP with the in tank pump. Dealer said the VP was ok, but I told them I would pull the codes and bring it back as soon as the 0216 shows up again. I have 10 mos left on my 5yr.100k warranty, so I hope to see the VP die in that time. So far in 30 miles of driving, no codes.
