I'm torn

I love the way Ram 2500s look. However, they are kinda scarse around here, but there seems to be quite a few Duramaxes with the 5 speed allison. I may have this backwards, but aren't duramaxes easier to make them fast?

Yes, Duramaxes are easier to make fast, but the front runners in drags and sled pulls are Cummins equipped trucks...you are taking about a 5spd Allison tranny, which means that the trucks are a few years old. The newer ones, not exactly sure of the YEAR, have 6spd Allisons in them.

However, just because they are easier to make fast and they have Allisons DON'T make them more dependable. Even the Allison needs upgrading if you upgrade the hp/tq. If you are going to have to upgrade the tranny anyway if you decide on going fast, why not look a little harder, or have a truck brought to the dealership, get a Dodge, pay LESS to have it's tranny upgraded and be happy knowing that you have a Cummins under the hood.

I'm not bashing a Duramax, they are decent trucks, but I bought my truck PRIMARILY for the engine...the good looks were a good runner up though

I just had mine done by goerands trans and it was around 3500.00 installed at there shop. The truck is totally different now,, no more slipping convertor and they have a 100,000 mile warranty on them and lifetime if you buy the triple lock convrtor. Also cant beat the service,, Dave will call you himself personally and explain anything to you,.,, Just tell him what you pull, what the max weight is, and he will build it

Well, I'm rather a noob at sled pulling, kinda diesel trucks in general. But, I just really like torque so, you know I'm sure you understand haha. But what are the classes for sled pulling anyway?

How do you figure that? you dont need to buy all sorts of billet stuff when you upgrade an allison

transgo and triple disc suncoast converter, you're looking at about 1300 bucks...Ive built a trans with this combo and its been great for the past 15,000 miles, huge boosted launches, street abuse, and close to 13 second flat 1/4 miles.

From what Ive heard if you want a bulletproof 48re you're looking at 4,000-5,000 dollars or so...

just my oppinion

But this fella wants to pull sleds too. Would you do THAT on a regular basis with just your torque converter/transgo upgrade? Pulling 40k lbs of weight that just comes to a screeching hault, sometimes causing these high hp/tq trucks to jerk violently, even for a split second, is harder on trannies than just doing a boosted launch and running down a track, or driving red light to red light, I think.

I'm not bashing on the Chevys man...I'm just giving him the low down of what I think...and I think that sled pulling is harder on a truck than drag racing is. On another note, because he wants to sled pull, would you consider your independant front suspension to be on par with the straight axle of our Dodges? Because I have personally seen a FEW Chevys break in that aspect sled pulling.

Also, it says in your profile that you're running a Stage IV Suncoast tranny, not just a tc and transgo...

I've been thinking about a 12V 5 speed, with a under/overdrive, I think it would rule having a Ram with ten speeds. haha.

the duramax's are VERY easy to make fast but once you start running 11's it gets expensive fast, ie, you need stronger engine parts

drive 'em both, then tell yourself "ok I have 2 seconds to make a decision"

The fact that you came on a CTD forum, have a cummins avatar, etc says that your deep down gut instinct is to buy a dodge. In that light, I would definetly say buy the dodge because you wont be "truely" happy driving anything else

good luck, let us know how it goes

also the reason you don't see as many dodges around is......... they don't sell as many... look at the sales figures... simple as that... i'm not saying that the dodge trucks are bad.. i'm just saying that the reason they're not as common as the chevys and fords is that they just simply don't sell as many... ford sells like 6 times the amount as dodge, and chevy sells about 5 times (chevy and gmc combined) as much as dodge....

chevy and GMC are always counted separately.
