General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

I'm tired of it!!!!

Lightbulb I'm tired of it!!!!

Everytime I open my new copy of Diesel Power magazine I have Gale Banks forcing his "Smoke is a Joke" theory down my throat. I'm not bashing him in any way because I know that black smoke is nothing more than unburned fuel but why is forcing this thought on everyone ok even though he has no sled pulling trucks??? His drag trucks are no doubt a force to be reckoned with but that's his only claim on his "no smoke" theory. Why hasn't he come out with a sled pull truck.......is it because he knows it will require way more fuel than his electronics and chargers can burn?

I'm just inquiring on this because all you ever see is the "Big 3" pulling, (without Banks recognition), and you never hear of Gale speaking of his "No smoke pulling truck."

I love going to pulls and seeing all kinds of trucks seeing who can go the farthest but you just never hear any of the drivers bragging that "Banks" got them that far.

I'm definitely a Cummins fan but the whole scenario has me wondering if Gale knows that it would take way more fuel to sled pull than what his systems can actually burn.

Gale Banks could care less about sled pullers!!!

He's making WAY WAY more more money than he can spend off of the UNeducated consumer and the older rowd wanting to tow their 5th wheel camper across the country..

I hear ya on that. But if he continuously wants to promote his "theory" why doesn't he back it up with some serious evidence? Sled pulling evidence that is.

I know all of the big 3 have the "opportunity" to puke smoke but why doesn't Gale wan't anything to do with it? I really think he knows that if he were to go into that part of performance he really wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Again, this is by no means a bash session, I'm just curious why he is pushing his thoughts on everyone and not backing them up by building a high-horsepower, mega-fuel, pulling truck.

I agree 100% with all of your comments about Gale Banks. I have been a Member here almost since this website started and everyone here that knows me can tell you I am NO FAN of Gale Banks, his company or his parts for diesel pickups! I don't think you will EVER see him build a top diesel sled pulling truck because he knows there is no way you can put down 2,000 H.P. without making some black smoke!

As you may or may not be aware, he has struggled mightily with his Banks Diesel Rail Dragster trying hard to knock off my good friend Dan Scheid's Record six (6) second 1/4 mile pass with his Scheid Diesel Rail Dragster. Banks started out with nitrous, ALOT of nitrous in an attempt to clear the black smoke and has blown several of his Duramax Engines in that rail dragster of his. He now has a blower (supercharger) on it and is supposed to be coming to the upcoming "T&S Performance" Diesel Rally/Drag Race/Sled Pull in May to debut his rail with that set-up. He is from the "land of fruits and nuts",.........California, where diesel emissions are a big problem so he has to maintain his "image!" Let me say he will NEVER be able to compete with the sled pulling trucks from Scheid, Haisley, the Atleys, Eric Stacey, or Ben Miller to name a few. And he also won't do it without having the black smoke! Nitrous is ILLEGAL in the sanctioning bodies that run the events for the names above (ITPA, PPL etc) so he is going to have to go in another direction I guess.

Hey, Hey, watch it.

I'm one of those old pharts you bash, and I'm far from uneducated. I like power, but I don't have anything against clean power. You can have your noise and smoke. I'll take "Git er done without a lot of fuss or offense."

Another thing any old timer can tell you. If you can get paid well for what you do, it doesn't make any difference what the peanut gallery thinks or says.

Mr. Martin:

I personally know Big Swole and can tell you I don't think he was insulting you Sir. We know that Banks ads cater to an older crowd like those towing fifth wheels or tag along campers and his own sales staff have told me that Sir. What I think David means about the "uneducated" term is that MOST diesel truck owners that are looking for a performance upgrade see Banks' big color ads in the various diesel or RV magazines and automatically think that Banks' Products are the best when they are not! There are ALOT of other aftermarket diesel performance companies that have BETTER programmers and products which are much cheaper too.

On the smoke issue, I am not against "clean power" either. But,....when it comes to an OFF-ROAD event like a sled pull event I don't see anything wrong with the trucks blowing some black smoke and Banks is against it in all venues!

Whoa! Whoa! WHOA!!

Read my post again!!!

Uneducated consumer AND the "older crowd" that tows..

What part of ANYTHING I said was "Bashing" the older crowd???

I'm a 40 year old police officer btw.. I'm no spring chicken myself.
I do NOT care for the black smoke NOR it being "Loud"!
I'll be the one forced to enforce the emmission stuff (site&sound) if they ever get too strict with it.

I was in NO WAY bashing older folks OR Uneducated consumers... "Uneducated" can simply mean they are green into the diesel thing and buy right into the fiirst Huge Banks Ad they read...

We were all green at one point. I know I was, and if I knew then what I know now, There are SEVERAL purchases that I would NOT have made...

Thank You john!!

I responded to him before I saw your post to him.
Yes, you are correct. I was not trying to insult anyone.
In Fact I was coming down on Banks for targetting the "Newbies" so to speak, and gettin them to spend their hard earned money thet they would not have otherwise spent had they done some research on Banks vs. Others first.

Thank you again! Hope to see ya sometime this year my Friend!

It's politics.

If a diesel guy is on board with being opposed to the characteristics that the general public sees, thinks and dislikes most about the word "diesel", well he can make money selling diesel parts and be on the "right side of the fence" against the "ugly" qualities of diesel. It's a win-win for him. It's a niche and he uses it.

I like a clean burning diesel but I'm under no illusions. There's a time and a place for diesel smoke. And I don't think strapping diesel trucks with all kinds of emissions equipment is appropriate.

Well I can't remember back that far.. lol

Yeah, I figure the DTR crowd is probably a good bit more mature than the CompD / CF crowd.. Not saying there aren't plenty of mature folks there as well.
