I'm making the jump from 2nd Gen to 3rd Gen..Good or Bad?

Hello All, I must say my 2nd Gen is running great (well, after an: Upgraded Trans, exhaust, fuel system, injection pump...etc..So, I am getting an 06' 3500 4x4 Laramie/Auto Quad Cab (Got a Hemi? Ah no) and I am very excited by the way but I have no idea about the Good,Bad and the Ugly on these "Quiet" Cummins. Please enlighten the 3rd Gen newbie....Any injection pump problems? Do the tranny's still stink? I pray the front-end got better (mine is loose no matter what I do) ...educate me w/ the important's I need to learn if you have a few extra minutes Thanks Everyone

Yeah, I'm thinking about doing the same thing... I just sold my truck tonight! I've been wanting to get another 2nd gen 12v 4x4 ext cab... But now I'm thinking about just getting the new body style; 2003+. I only want it for the new body style, otherwise I'd prefer the old 12v Cummins... I think the injection pump is better on the 3rd gen but still weak.

3rd gen is quiet. CP3 problems are few and far between. Most want to blow it out of proportion and say they all fail. Some liftpumps have been bad. Some are fine. I don't know about the trans cause I have a 6 spd but believe they have been holding up okay. Fuel economy has been going down with the introduction of smog stuff on the trucks.
Personally I wouldn't own a 2nd gen because of the noise of the diesel.

Its a tough change to make,I went from a 95 12 valve to a 05.I think the comfort and drivability factor of the new ones out ways any flaws they have. Its just like anything some say they have no problems some say they are junk.I use my truck to pull quite a bit and the only problem I have had is the injector pump at 9000 miles. And yes the front ends are still the same. The power of the new ones makes the older cummins feel like you were driving a 4 cylinder. But you had more room for SAFE upgrades in the 12 valves, when I say safe I mean proven safe.In my opinion the stuff for these new ones has not really been proven over a couple of hundred thousand miles like the original banks on the cummins. This is all just my opinion though.I say take the leap you wont regret it.

I am on my third CP3. Original plus two. Do a search on CP3. Way too many failures have been reported. I certainly wouldn't call the reported failure rate blown out of proportion. It is a known problem that needs to be solved by DC.

I wish mine sounded like a 2nd gen! Gotta love the ol' diesel sound!

you guys are also fogetting that you can have p-pump a common rail and have a 12valve killer. But, once all the modded cp3s are tested and perfected, the p7100 will be old news with the adjustability factor in the driver's seat. Don't get me wrong I love 12valves and the power they make with a small budget, but you can't beat a single turboed 600hp hpcr without touching anything inside the motor.

Oh I've seen the threads. I saw superduty trying to scare everyone to put in an aftermarket pump. Yes a few people have problems. To say it is a huge problem like a 6.0 PSD oil leak is not correct, IMO
People were puking on the new in tank pumps saying they were garbage with a couple of people having failures. I think more defrost blend doors have broken than CP3s.

Don't know about 06 but my 03 is better in every way cept for the creaks in the cab interior. I don't like the electronic throttle feel but I'm getting used to it. My 03 4.10 even gets better mpg than my 97 3.54. Craig

Test drive it and see what you think. I have both and have plans to rebuild the 95 in a few years. It will stay long after the new one is gone! I Love them both but the 12v just drives so much nicer. When I give it throttle I know what it is doing. Not to mention less chances of an electrical problem, and both trucks ride around on the same chasis for the most part. I dont regret buying either one but I do know which one is going to last the longest. My last thought is that payments stink.

Get an 06. They've actually made some small, but nice improvements since 03.

I really like the new interiors of the new trucks. I had an 03 but it had the auto and I like a 6speed better. My 01 had a 6speed and pulled allot better, even though the 03 was the common-rail, it was still the detuned HO for the auto. The new trucks will be great long haulers. I'm looking for a 02 6speed, long bed, quadcab, leather, loud Cummins!!! I like the shake, plus the sound of the blowoff valve while shifting!

I test drove two '06 shortbed 4x4s back to back, one auto and the other 6-speed. I have always been a manual tranny guy and have never been impressed with stock autos, but what the heck, I'll try one. Well after two long drives I came back liking the auto a lot better. It felt much improved over even the '04. It has tow/haul mode besides OD off. It felt like the power was getting planted to the ground, and it didn't have the soft mushy auto feel. It shifted nice and was more intuitive than about any auto I've ever driven. My biggest beef with autos is they don't kick down worth a darn when you're motoring along and hit the pedal. This one did. Also it didn't try to stay in 2nd when coming to a near stop then accelerating (which most autos do I've driven).

I noticed it didn't upshift rapidly and hold RPM way down either. That was nice. The engine programming seemed much more adept to the auto. When driving the six speed the power ramps up and is peaky in every gear, starts kinda slow then hits pretty fast, then falls off. So when you're accelerating through the gears it's a series of peaky forward thrusts. With the auto the power comes up and stays, since you're not letting off the pedal to shift. I know if I were to get an '06 it would be an auto for sure.
