Thumbs down I'm Done W/ Dodge!!!

I cannot belive this I have 600miles on the NEW Injector pump and I got the P0216 Code today...

It has a 12 month warranty on the IP, but I have to take it back off.

From what my friend says I be looking forward to this about every 30-50k...

So I'm really considering Selling the truck...

G-note sorry to here that. It sounds to me as your warrenty is up? I would check the after market pumps, sorry I can't remember the link to the site but i'm sure someone will chime in. I read on one of the threads that a company has built a vp44 for, I think FED EX. I believe they beefed up the pump and put a better curcuit board in it for better dependability. I believe it's around 1600.00. Once my warrenty is up and mine goes out that is what I'll try. Don't give up yet. Your only other option is an older Dodge, Newer 03-?, A durmax and Ford's shouldn't be an option! I'd rather walk than drive a Ford,

Hate to say it but truthfully if I had a 24 valve I would have sold it long ago.
Face it, the fuel delivery and injection systems are lemons.

If I had researched more (okay, if I had at all) into the 24v before I bought I wouldn't have touched it. I was just stoked on a cummins 5spd w/ no rust and stone stock.

Infidel is right, the fuel delivery system is complete junk and everyone who designed it should never work in engine design again.

I kind of wish I had a 12V too. Having a new injector pump go bad within 600 miles is a kick in the stones for sure. I do love my truck so far, but that could change any day.

OK fellas, don't be so hard on the VP44. Yes, it is the redheaded stepchild of CTD injection pumps, but it's still mostly pretty decent.

Just because you happen to have a pump go bad in 600miles doesnt mean that the design is inherently bad, or that someone should be fired. There are a lot of good designs that are executed poorly...

The biggest culprit is, imo, American fuel quality. But what can you do?

I had a VP die at 40K. Does this mean all VPs die at 40k? No. Does this mean I will have to replace it every 40k? No to that too.

There are plenty of VPs out there with well over 100k on them-- I know of one with 175K. And these are on stock trucks with weak or dead LPs, oem restrictive plumbing, etc.

Yes, the VP has a higher percentage of pump failures. That's doesn't mean they will all fail.

I've considered a 12V, too, but the 24V is just MUCH more streetable at a given HP level, and the head moves more air (less likely to surge turbos). I'll take the VP44 to get the NV5600.

My fave truck would be an 04 305/555 truck with NV5600 and 3.73s

sorry to hear about the pump, I have 150 k on my original vp and still will out run a new Ford 6.0 dont give up on the Dodge

My 12v is pumping out MUCH more power than my 24v....it runs a 13.90 @ 101mph in the 1/4 mile and is every bit as streetable as my 24v and dead reliable too......I actually like the way my 12v performs on the street better.....not saying I couldn't get my 24v to do the same but I would certainly have a much lighter wallet trying! There is no expensive electronic engine management/VP44/DTC's/LP/sensor junk to deal with AND it gets quite a bit better mileage to boot. Sorry, but when it comes to power and reliability, the P7100 wins hands down in my book. There are several things that could have been done better from the factory on the 24v trucks to make the fuel systems much more reliable....but they were NOT done. Take the LP problem for instance: most other vehicles on the road can have a reliable fuel pump - there is no reason why a 24v CTD can't either....put the proper output pump in the tank (like everyone else) or have it driven off the cam like a 12v.....how many 12v's have LP problems compared to 24v's? But they chose to stick to a problem-prone LP. How about the VP44 ECU? One failure after another.......obviously the design was not working.....either make a better containment method for the PC board or remove it from the harsh environment - but they didn't (well, Fed Ex got it fixed but the solution has yet to make it to DC ).....They can make an ECM that survives bolted to the block but not to the VP?!?! My point is, these thing could have been fixed but for the most part were not addressed. DC and Cummins didn't stand behind their product enough to get real solutions to simple and overcomable problems.....why? Lets face it VP44 equipped trucks left a lot of people with a sour taste in their mouths and it pushed them away from the CTD Dodge. It's happening to G-NOTE now.......

I should have clarified that streetable to me means smoke control.
I agree, plenty of 12Vs are plenty streetable. But at 500hp, the 24V is going to be easier to control smoke.

12Vs have all kinds of merits, so I'm not trying to bash them in any way. Just trying to stick up for the 24V-- it's not THAT bad, tough I agree it has been bad enough to really push some guys away from Dodge.

Can't really blame them if they have to replace 3 IPs in 100K

With a Cummins powered truck, expectations are high.....people buy them because they want the best engine money can buy but when they find out the fuel system stinks so bad that it makes for a somewhat unreliable truck when they spent a lot of extra money to have a reliable truck, they will be mad and likely not return to a CTD Dodge. I do have to disagree with smoke control too.....I bet your 150 hp sticks will smoke hard when you want them to. If I want to drive around without any smoke belching out of my 12v, I can....I just flip the valet switch and drive with a light right foot and the 370's won't smoke.....I have a feeling a MAD equipped 24v with Mach 4's would have similar drivability characteristics......with either truck, if you are hard on the throttle, she's going huff out the black. I really do have a hard time trying justify to someone that has had a few VP failures that the 24v fuel system isn't all that bad. It really is too bad.....the 24v is such a great motor - I love it but only because it has worked great for me.....I could see myself humming a different tune if I was chewing up VP44's.

You know what really chaps my hide, the fact that the guy at the dealer said that these injector pumps are reliable, and I must have added an aftermarket control device to burn it up...

I told him, unless he wants a law suit on his hands he better do the right thing!!!

The 99 that I had was on it's original pump with 128k when that truck got wrecked. For piece of mind my husband put a fass on our 01.5 so I wouldn't have to worry as much about it going out.

Unfortunately, the FASS won't have much to do with the reliability of the VP44 on a stock truck and nothing to do with the VP44 ECU failures(like a 0216 DTC related failure) on a stock or modified truck. There is a small vane pump on the VP will supply fuel to the VP even with a non funtioning LP.....this is why there are many Dodges running around with dead LP's that go thousands of miles with no ill effects on the VP. A good LP has nothing to do with the electronic failures. As it has been discussed in many other threads here, regardless of the popular belief, wire tap boxes will not cause a good VP to fail and not adding a wire tap box will not help a bad VP last a long time......it is rumour and fiction. My experience has been that the dealers are educated the least on these things and only know as much as what the latest TSB's tell them! (which isn't always correct either)
