II SPS 62/14 Toast
I blew my stock turbo about 4 months ago. I was really in a bind and I called both HTT and II and talked to tech support on which turbo would be a good replacement. Htt recommended their 71 series and II recommended a SuperPhatshaft series. The shop doing the install talked me into the II SPS (6280) and ordered it for me. My truck has never run right since then and I have heard a million theories as to why. Well after trying every possible fix I finally told the shop to remove the turbo. Here is what I found.............
1. Not a true SPS(6280) but an assortment of what I think were probably used parts to begin with. The turbine is labeled as a regular Phatshaft but the compressor looks like it is from the Super family but has had some major grinding done to it. I don't know if there was a casting flaw or what but someone spent some quality time with a die grinder on the front of the compressor housing. A third of the front is ground down and is not pretty.
2. Cracks, cracks, and more cracks. Everywhere you look on the inside of the turbine housing is cracked. The flange has a major crack and is leaking and the wastegate seats are so cracked a whole piece is about to come off. If I hadn't removed the turbo I am quite certain it would have either put a chunk of the wastegate seat through the turbine and blew up or just disentegrated internally.
3. The access plate for the wastegate was leaking profusely and looks like it is missing some sort of seal. I think this may be the original problem that has caused everything else to go.
I paid full price for what was supposed to be a new SPS (6280) 62/14/71 turbo. That is not what I received, it has neither new parts and it is not a true 6280. Now my shop tells me that II is already talking like they don't want to honor the warranty because cracks usually come from excessive heat and is my fault. This truck is a daily driver and has never sled pulled or drag raced. I have only towed with it once and that was less than 8,000 pounds and I was babying it because I had just upgraded the trans and didn't know if it needed to be broken in or not. I also know how to read a pyrometer and although this turbo has caused my truck to run hot from the start I have never exceeded 1400 degrees for more than a split second.
Bottom line is this turbo did not run right and I was dissappointment from the first day it was installed. It ran bad 4 months ago when installed and runs exactly the same now cracks leaks and all. It has never been able to make more than 34psi of boost (even with boost fooler) and won't even start making boost until 2000rpm.
My theory is that they did not have a serviceable turbo when we ordered one. I think I even remember the guy saying he might have to build one that day to get it out. I was thinking great a brand new turbo, not a cobbled up POS of used parts.
I have not personally talked to II since the turbo has been removed, only the shop owner has. I am trying to give them some time to work things out before I jump in. From what I have heard from the shop owner, things are not looking good as to II taking care of me properly. I deserve what I paid for and I am not going to accept anything less. Wish me luck, Tom J.

S300 works good for a short while in my personal experience. They wont explode *usually like a Holset but they wear out fast under normal driving conditions.....

Winner winner chicken dinner!
You may want to call HTT and talk to them direct, they will get you set up. Im surprised to hear about your turbo from Industrial, that really sucks. I thought they had a pretty good rep and stood behind their products.

My SPS62/80 blew up and I called II to see what they had, I was going to upgrade to a silver bullet or something and they didn't have anything for me, they where waiting parts, so I called Paul at HTT and had him send me a HTT HT 71 series Quick Diesel 64 and a Spearco inner cooler and man, I couldn't be happier. I like both places and won't bad mouth anyone, but "GB"; but I really like my set up...

I had it a year and a half when she let go. I was at a stop light started going threw the gears and all the sudden BANG!!! I thought I had blown a IC boot, but I pulled over right away and looked everything over and didn't see anything, so I pulled the intake off the compressor side and oil was everywhere... I'm lucky Silver's a small town and my buddy with a flat bed with a wench was going by about that time... I wasn't there 15 minutes... The worst part was not having my truck for a week or so, so I lucked out and found a clean, super clean 92 PowerW250... Still on cloud 9 about that find... Now I have two great trucks...

Maybe call II yourself (in a good mood, though) and make sure that you are getting the straight scoop. Kinda dumb (and I haven't heard of this type of stuff from II) to **** off a customer, and get a bad rep, call yourself and eliminate the 'translation' and that middle man.
