Question Identifying rear ends

I got my Getrag fixed and now I am on to the rear end.... I have looked at the tag on the case and it says that it is a 3.54 ratio. My FSM does not talk about a 3.54. It talks about a 3.55. Aside from that, is there a way to identify these rearends between a 60 and a 9.25HD? The truck is a D250.
I want to change the seal on the axle. Can I just pull it straight out? According to the FSM there is no little "C" clip in the differential that needs to be removed. Thanks

It is a D70U if it is the stock rear. Thats what they all got.

3.54, 3.55 is the same thing... just depends on how you round the decimal points.

It is a full floating axle so there are no c-clips. the axle shaft is held in by the ring of bolts around the hub at the wheel. If you need to replace the seals on the end of the axle tubes you will have to pull the hubs after you pull the shafts. Look in the sticky for the article on rear brake rebuild to show you all the parts and how to get it appart/together.

If you have never had the rear axle appart I would recommend pulling the carrier and looking at the condition of the bearings. Mine were shot and had spit the shims out at 200K miles, you are a bit past that!

It had excessive backlash, but if it was whinning I could not hear it over the straight pipe

The main indication was when I pulled the cover for a lube change the magnet was covered with torn up pieces of shims.

You see, there-in lies the problem.... this thing has that "Pull Rite" hitch on it and it is centered about 1" ahead of the cover on the differential. I will have to drop the hitch (half a days work, just having had back surgery) just to pull the cover. I see it coming, though at sometime in the future. I found the tag that was on the under the hood. It had come off and I had put it in the glove compartment. It says it is a "Spicer 70". The front end had 1000# axles....

spicer 70 is the dodge label of the D70 *I believe*, which as stated above is a D70U which is differnt to a Dana 70 its a smidge smaller i do believe (someone correct me if im wrong) but as for the 1000# axle up front i have no clue as to what that would be.. im still really new to the 1st gen drivetrain

The full name of the company is "Dana Spicer" so they get used interchangeably.

From some research the U version is actually the light version of a D70. It uses the same carrier bearings as a D60 as well as the same spline count on the pinion yoke. It also only has 32 spline axle shafts VS the 35 spline units in a regular 70. No wonder these trucks seem to eat carrier bearings up so bad.

There is also a D70HD that is an upgrade to a regular 70 that uses D80 carrier bearings IIRC.

Question While We Are On The Subject

If the SRW trucks have a 70U, what do the DRW trucks have??

Just for discussion sake, on another truck, I have a HD60 DANA; it has a second reinforcing "WEB" around the center housing, that plain old 60s don't have.

Thanks.
