Identifying a cylinder miss

How do you identify a cylinder miss on a diesel? Is it something obvious or something you have to have years of knowledge to be able to tell? Just curious what it may sound like or how it is found. Thanks.

try cracking injector lines at the injector and listen for the engine to start running different... if you crack an injector and there's no change or it runs better, there's your bad hole

Bingo, Cut out test. one cylinder at a time. crack the injector line nut and leak fuel. If the injector is GOOD the tone of the engine WILL CHANGE when the injector line is cracked. If the injector is BAD there will be NO CHANGE in engine tone.
