just got back from picking up power steering/hydroboost pump at oriellys.

read the factory workshop manual, which says little. looks pretty straight forward. be careful not to damage seal going in...

anything else?

Is it actually turning? That one has a vacuum pump in front if it right? IIRC, you can see the shaft with a mirror to make sure it is turning. Also.....pull the vacuum line off the vacuum pump and see if there is vacuum?

I don't know for sure , but the shaft in the vacuum pump may be 2 piece. I am guessing that the back half isn't turning. I've never had a new pump not pump. You can always take the return line off, and see if it is flowing any fluid.

Are you sure it's bled and not airlocked? These things are horrible to get the air out. The first little while you run it, sometimes they won't do anything, then suddenly it'll burp out some air and start whining and foaming like crazy. Then you spend the next hour bleeding it.

OK.. many thanks. I'll jack front end up... steer end to end to bleed out air.

issue fixed... system was extremely low on fluid. took 1.25+ qts to competely fill system back up.

jacked up front end, turn steering wheel end to end for 5 minutes. was starting to get some fluid movement. keep working steer wheel and brake pedal for another 10+ minutes. steering pump kept making noises.

check fluid levels multiple times, kept dumping fluid until foam overflowed. what it took to fix was repeatly dumping fluid in until foal overflowed. eventually system finally filled up with fluid without air.

doing this job in cold weather increases difficulty of bleeding out.
now back to normal....

looks like I need to write up a How to change out a power steering/hydro boost pump.

thanks everyone!!!!

reporting back... system leaked down again... twice

filled system full twice since bleeding out. drains out at rate of 1/2 quart+ a day.

took CTD to car wash yesterday. trying to ID exactly where leak is coming from. I'm thinking it's coming from seal in steering box.

oil all over again... looks like power steering pump I replaced was good the entire time.

I put a light greenish transmission dye from NAPA in my power steering to locate the leak. If you have a flourescent light you can see it better but the fluid is greenish anyhow so its easy to spot by eye.
