Hello,

I've got an 89 Dodge 250 and I've been running a pretty high mix of waste motor oil though it... and its terrific. My father in law asked me if I wanted any hydraulic fluid, as he has several gallons. I'm curious if that is pretty much the same as motor oil? I think its a little thicker... so would I need to run a higher diesel to hydraulic fluid ratio than I do with my waste motor oil? I currently run somewhere around 33% give or take a few %'s!

I'm kind of new to all this but what I've been doing is I bought these 1micron filter bags off ebay that I found out about from here, pour the dirty stuff in the top and pour the filtered stuff into my tank. Would that be okay with the hydraulic fluid... assuming I can run it?

Thanks!

Be extremely careful as used hydraulic fluid can contain metal filings. You might be able to get the most of it with the 1mic bags and a magnet.

hydro is around 30wt on average. It has alot of stuff in it to keep seals soft.

So... its probably not a good idea to run this stuff in my truck huh? Due to the additives I mean... right?

The toyota service rep told me that, I check every new batch of use oil in an old hubcap with a torch & compare it to a known dino sample to see if similar not real high tech but so far it's worked for me. BTW I don't use synthetic since it tends to goo up the filter on the truck & starves it out.

so the water base doesn't burn as easy

Actually, that's pretty close on how the COC (Cleveland Open Cup) test is performed to measure the flash point of combustionable fluids.
