Hi Guys,
I just installed a rebuilt HX35W turbo since my old HX35W finally gave up the ghost.
My problem is this.....
The rebuilt turbo does not perform like my old one did. My old turbo was the OEM factory original all stock and untouched with 336,000 miles on it. The old turbo,when it kicked in, would break the tires loose in 2nd,3rd,and 4th gears and at 1/2 throttle would make the clutch slip.
Well the new rebuilt turbo is not doing this.
The guiy I got it from said it needs to be run awhile to break in. I don't belive it. When I had both turbos on the bench, they appeared to be identical in every way. I counted the blades (both are 8) The exhaust housings appear to be the same size as well. Is there an adjustment I can do the the wastegate actuator rod? I want the maximum boost from this turbo.
The rebuilt turbo is a professionally done item and appears to be brand new in every aspect.
Any advice???????

I guess the question is, how much boost are you making with the new turbo?

I have no gauge. I just KNOW it isn't what it used to be.
It seems like it is slowly getting better. Time will tell!

you need a gauge, to confirm boost PSI as you could easily have leaks at intercooler boots, and without an actual gauge not knowing how much boost your making,is like driving with your eyes shut
its possible that your making too much boost right now and the truck is defueling because its seeing over 22psi, this assuming you have no boost fooling (chip or programming).
and adjusting the wastegate without the aid of a boost gauge is unwise,

well my truck is a 1997 remember..... no chips , no pc control.
I had an assistant check the connections while I was giving it boost.
I have a #5 fuel plate and it is slid all the way forward. and the titming is set at 19>5 degrees advance. The truck was literally a rocket before the turbo swap.

sorry, but nothing in your post indicates its a 97, boost cannot be checked while veh is not moving (even if you reved it to red line), you can rig up a homemade boost checker(bacically come rubber caps, allowing you to pressurize the system, with the engine off) with some end caps from homedepot

I noticed about 1/2 " of thread showing on the wastegate actuator rod,the rebuilt one has a good inch of thread showing.
I think this may be what I need to adjust.

Yes, check that. Also any kind of wastegate leak or pre-turbine leak will DRASTICALLY effect performance.
