hx35 or hx40

What is the difference between these turbo's. I will probably be lookin for an hx35 because I know you are better off with the smallest turbo you can run on your settup. But I wonder. It probably spools a little slower, would it generate less boost at same rpm as hx35? Just give cooler air at higher boost/rpm/throttle?

HX-40 is bigger, slower to spool, lower boost at cruise... etc.
Also, no where near as reliable...unless rebuilt for our trucks.
HX-35 would be perfect if not adding more HP than the Smarty! Good to around 300 hp and up to 35 psi boost!

Well, I've hit 35psi with my hy35. I am planning on some mach 1.6's in the future along with the smarty. Think I would still be ok?

I feel that the HX-40 Turbos have gotten somewhat of a "bad rap" over the last few years. As RJ said, the HX-35 is a pretty tough turbo. But IMHO, the HX-40's can be a good turbo as long as you keep the boost around 35-40lbs.
I have run the HX-40's on my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve and also on a 2002 Dodge CTD 24 valve that I had. I never had any problems with them, but I did run the 16cm housing and NOT that large 18cm housing. I saw about 25-28 more H.P. going from a HX-35/12 to the HX-40/16 on my 1996. These numbers were very close in going from the HY-35/9 on my 2002, to the
HX-40/16.

Hope this has helped you some. Good luck.

Perfect turbo would be a BD Super B. Very fast spooling and a full step up from the HX35. But if on a tight budget, The HX-35 is hard to beat. You may over power it a bit at WOT, with 1.6's, but not a lot.

Automatic trannys are always better staying a little on the small side with turbos.... unless only racing. JMO

How the hel have you hit 35 lbs with the hy-35??? Thats what i have and ive only hit 21 lbs. Do you have a boost fooler?
On the other side, I agree with rowj, BD's Super B is a very good turbo from what i hear. Unless i get talked into another one by the time buy time comes, Ill be going with the Super B and some Mach 2's for my next mods.

Dodgenit, have you put on the home made j hook onto the HY turbo? I've pulled 37psi out of my HY-35. If I was to vote on the best turbo out there it would be the garrett 3782 stage 2. My spool-up is as good as the HY was with tons more air, lots of room to grow into if you require. At $1400 cdn, it was a smoken deal. The turbo still look like brand new after 3000 miles. Makes me wonder if I should even try bigger sticks. My oil is still clean after 3000 miles. My old mach 6's, would make mud in few miles.

I have a PDR modified HX40 on my 2001. Pretty happy with it, last summer I picked it up for $800.00 USD. Right from PDR. Its a little slow to spool, unless I have the quadzilla on, then its more efficent for the truck. But with just the Bosch 300's It takes a bit to spool it up, but once it does its a world of difference.

Like stated above keep the boost under 40PSI and it will take care of you... I would like to get my hands on a BD Super B, just to see the difference.. I heard they are a really well built unit..

Gentlemen, I'm looking to upgrade my tubo. You guys seem to have a good understanding of the process. Per my sig, I'm just looking to tow and race around town. I could use your opinions on a direction to go. I eventually want 350 to 400 HP.

I would try a Super B or S300 variant. The HX-40's that are from PDR seem to be making better reliability. Still I have also seen the reworked HX-35-16 from PDR feed some 400 Hp units and still be usable, that is low enough EGT.

My S300G is a little small for my applications, spools fast but chokes out near the top end of the RPM band, not really good for towing. Problem is that towing takes a different turbo than hot rodding around. Towing takes flow, not so much spool to keep cool. Hot rodding take spool to LOOK cool.. Usually you are through the race before you see high EGT.

Ya, smarty-that boost fools and I J-hooked it. I have had it up to 37-38psi. Not efficiant then. I tow a gooseneck horse trailer, haul firewood, hay, etc. But drive it every day to work. I want it all. Towing, Passing, Fuel economy, and to blow people's mind when they see a #7000 pound diesel 4x4 smoke em.

Hi Dog, I've been considering the S300 so far, thanks for the opinion.

Oh I forgot to ask this, what stock turbo on the newer model Dodge trucks might facilitate the upgrading of older 12 valve like mine ? I have access to a few at a very good price.
