Hunter Safety

Well I took my hunter safety class last night... 4 hours sitting in a classroom hearing the importance of not doing stupid stuff with guns... Really glad I did most of it online, or it would have been 10 hours.

It really irked me that we spent so much time talking about "accidental" discarges.

THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGES, ONLY NEGLIGENT ONES!

I pointed the difference out to the instructor after the class, told him that by definition an accident was something that could not be prevented... He said he had never thought about it that way.

Just figuerd I would take it so it would be out of the way for next year.

That has to be hard to deal with. Are they sure that it wasn't a defective bullet? It really doesn't matter I guess. Really a sad story to hear.

Last time I took the class, the instructor pulled out a mousetrap, set it, then passed it to a person in the front row.
He was instructed to pass it to the person beside him, then to the next, all the way until everyone had VERY carefully passed it the next person.
When he picked it up from the last person in the last row, he carefully let the Bail down against the base. Then he asked "Why didn't someone make it "safe" by "Unloading" it before passing it to the next person?"

Point made , I never forgot that object lesson.

I took mine a couple of years ago. I must admit it seemed kind of silly to me that there I was....27 years old and wearing a loaded Glock 22 in a concealed holster on my hip....and they were trying to teach me about gun safety. Needless to say, I passed the course easily. In fact, I think I only missed one question on the entire written test.

I'm a very safety oriented person. Not only with guns, but with many other things as well. The class seemed silly to me, but I realize that there are a lot of people out there who just don't THINK about which way their gun is pointing.

A few weeks ago a guy from my parents' church was showing me a handgun that he bought. As he was removing the magazine from it, he had it pointed directly at my chest. I firmly told him that he needed to be careful about where he pointed it as I gently reached up and aimed it in another direction. His comment...."Don't worry. It's not loaded."

It is amazing how many people are killed by "unloaded" guns.

I took this class proably 10 years ago. I was only about 10 at the time. Dad took it with me as well. It was an interesting class to me. Learned a lot of cool things that I still practice today. I also scored better than dad on the exam. Made a 98 on the exam and dad made a 96 or 94.

i took it at age 10 here in MD...then by age 14 i was an assistant/JR instructor with the guys that taught me. it was good times, i did that for about 4 years and i always loved listening to the questions the little kids come up with.

"is it legal to shoot deer in the head"

"is it legal to shoot deer with paintballs"

"what happens if you kill a deer with just a knife"

You are a tougher man than me.

But the class I was in could have been summed up with Ted's comment. I think it was partly due to the instructor. Nice guy, just not to great of a teacher. Plus you have to teach to the dumbest person there. Who in the world we live in is usually pretty dumb. Especially when it comes to gun safety. (See the sad but stupid thread....)

One night when I was working as a police officer, I was teamed up with an older member of our department, 'Roland'. (think 'Barney Fife' here, complete with a low riding swivel holster!) Roland and I were dispatched to the Town Hall for an activated entry alarm. When we got there, the door to the basement had been forced open and was swinging in the breeze. We drew our weapons and started down the basement steps, me first with Roland right behind me, keeping close to one wall. When we reached the bottom step, I turned around towards Roland so I could tell him which way I intended to go. Roland was about 2 steps higher than I was, and when I turned around, I found myself looking right down the barrel of his antiquated .38 special! Apparently, he'd decended the whole flight of stairs with the thing aimed right at the back of my head! I put Roland in front of me from that point forward!

This is something that amazes me. The degree of ignorance that we have in this contry (possibly others, don't know haven't been there yet). Not just guns, but all things. People just don't look past their noses!
