HP and Torque at wheel vs rated HP
Have a question about HP and torque ratings from a dyno run and the rated HP from Dodge. I have a recent purchase 95 CTD 4x4 auto and before I start upgrading, i wanted a base set of HP and torque figures. did three runs on the local dyno and got back 137hp at the wheels and 307 on the torque. my question is what percentages are you guys adding back to get actual engine HP and torque listed in your high numbers or are you listing HP at the wheels when you start talking 300-500 Hp in the the forums. IS 137 at the wheels what you should expect from a stock 160 hp rated Cummins?
thanks.

There are "drive-line" losses that are applied depending on your transmission. Typically 10% is used for manual transmission models and up to 15-20% is applied for automatics depending on their structure and build. The Early LB7 Duramax/Allison combo comes in at a measly 17% loss typically.
I tend to say that all the numbers reported here are typically Rear Wheel HP as it is actually measurable on the dyno and are comparible. Trying to add losses for the driveline is an estimate at best and would make an already heated debate over power more so.
IF you take 160 Hp and subtract 10% for a minimum loss you get around 144 RWHP. So I would say its bang on. This loss also applys to Torque.
You will see that with a % loss, the more you add, the more you loose. To get 500 RWHP you are pushing over 50 HP through driveline loss and those 50 Hp adders get cut down pretty fast.
