Howling noise

Developed a howling noise on trip to Iowa. at first i thought it was new tires and the road noise but have done a couple prior trips with these tires without the howling sound.
Checked rear end fluid and was fine no clinking sounds when engaging drive train in forward or reverse. Goes down the road fine with no vibrations ?
Thinking possible pinion gear wear ?

how many miles on the truck? if less than 300,000 miles you shouldn't have any rear end noise
i have 200,000 on mine and no noise. but then the '01 is noisier (engine, exhaust), so maybe i don't hear any howling...... my trans makes a whining noise when it's cold (-20) until it warms up

Could be center support bearing on driveshaft or pinion bearings. Is sound constant or does it change? If it changes in sound on or off throttle most likely pinion bearings or ring and pinion. If constant sound carrier bearing.
