Hot wire, a/c issue?

Last night, just cruising around town with the a/c on non-recirc, what appears to be the wires feeding something to do with the a/c directly under the glove box got so hot they burned the wife's toe. I have not blown a fuse or gotten melted insulation, but it was bloody hot. Seems there is a high resistance issue there. Anybody else notice anything similar?

If I remember right, mine does the same thing. But to tell you the truth, I had completely forgotten about it until this post. Been that way for a few years and haven't had any problems, but would like to know why it is like that.
