Holset HX52 and HTT Pro 52 Opinions?

So my friend and I went through some of the turbo's lying around the garage and I have 2 good Volvo - Holset HX52's. The seem to have smaller than usual exhaust housings and I'd like to see if anyone has run one as a single and what mods you used to support it.

They have same markings on the exhaust housing as does the pictures of HTT Pro 52 housings I've seen. I looked around a little and it seems they would be considered a 67/16, a little bigger than a Sled Puller 66 right?

With all due respect I dont need 15 people saying "too laggy go with a..." Cause I have these here, dont cost $1800 and I'm at least going to try them. I just need information and or experience. If I dont like it I can slap my HT3B on with my HX35.

Has anyone machined the adapter plate and have specs? I'll be welding up a homemade down pipe. Only other issue I see it the inverted intercooler tube setup where it looks like it used to go inside instead of around the outside.

You guys think New Era 370 or 435 injectors would be a good start to get this thing rollin? What boost levels can they run since these are not wastegated?

So...who's done it?

Heck, Try one. Im curious.
Your going to need some fuel to get them to light though.
As for the boost levels, what you got done to the block and head? You will need orings and studs other wise that headgasket is going to go POP!

I know you said you dont want to hear it, but its going to be smokey and laggy if you going to use it as a daily driver. BUT, I have heard of guys running K31s as a single, and those have a 71mm wheel.

Yea, I know I'll need O-ring'ed and studded. I also know I'll need fuel, so I wont be running one until I add the studs, O-rings, and at least injectors, plus fabbing the exhaust and stuff too.

I'm aware that it'll be smokey and laggier than stock, but I'm not like most guys when it comes to driving their trucks. I dont want to sound like a jerk, I just dont want 11 posts about what other $1700 turbo I should run. I live out in the sticks and if I wanted something street friendly I'd buy a Cavy or leave it stock. To put it simply I used to drive my Camaro year round with M/T and it didnt bother me a bit. Plus I dont have to drive my truck everywhere I have lots of other vehicles.

I want to pull with this truck and some 1/4 mile too.

Sounds like it will be some fun when you get it going, seems like new era 370's with your custom plate and some dv's would be enough but I'm definitely no pro

I dont think it will be too bad with some fuel myself. My cousin ran a sled puller 68 for a while, and it spooled pretty darn good i thought. Wasnt bad at all daily driving. Overdrive was a little laggy, but out of the hole it wasnt bad. Id definately try it if i were you

What size turbine wheel does a 52 have?

I have heard of guys have great success with Silver Bullets on daily driven 12 valves with some topend work done. While only a 66 mm compressor, the 74 mm turbine adds some mass to the assembly, but they seem to be a good setup that's not incredibly laggy.

I dont mind some lag, but I'll definately be letting everyone know how they work. I'll volunteer to be a test pilot for you guys My understanding is that the Volvo - Holset HX52 I have is 67/71. Not completely sure on the exhaust housing but I think it's a 16cm. If anyone has a place I can cross part numbers or anything let me know and I'll find out for sure.

This weekend the truck is getting the DTT Converter and Valve body Kit. Then on weekends I'm not rebuilding my 9" center section and 383 stroker, I'll be fabbing up parts for the exhaust and adapter plate

On most holsets, the size of the exhaust housing is stamped in the inlet of the exhaust housing. You should be able to find a number if you clean the soot off the mouth of the exhaust housing about an inch down all the way around. A wire brush should do the trick.

Overall Though, Very Happy With It. Also Smokey If You Dont Keep The Revs Up. Thats My .02 Hope That Will Help Out

I'm bringing this back up to the top. This turbo specs are 67/71/16. It has a 16cm2 housing. Has anyone run anything remotely close to this size with a 12 valve, and if so how did it run? What did you use to fuel it and what was your whole setup?

I would really like to run this turbo as a single since I could stay in the street class pulling, yet make very good power. Although the truck does get daily driven so I dont want to get 4mpg and have smokey bear pulling me over in town.

I have 3 of these things but I'm going to need to fab up a down pipe and exhaust flange since it's not compatable with anything. I dont want to invest in these items if it isnt worth my time.

The other side of the coin for me would be a more streetable setup with the compound HX35 and HT3B, but I'd be staying out of the pulling scene and more toward street fun and drag.

Didn't Brandon have a huge turbo on a 12v that he was using drugs to spool? I seem to remember him saying something about spraying to get it to light before he left?

I'd be careful with the standard HX52 as it has a weak shaft in it.That is the turbo Volvo runs on all their road tractors and at work we break them left and right with less HP than one is trying to shove through them with their Dodge. There is a vast difference in both those chargers, the HX52 and the Pro52,but if I were to run one on the street I'd have the turboshaft upgraded and have the compressor wheel cover pinned.

The Holset Pro52 is a very under rated charger and many overlook it.Once its been upgraded and pinned it will take as much abuse as the others and can be pushed fairly hard. They will both be laggy but once they are lit they will go.....Andy

Well I've got a run of the mill HX52. I figured it might be a good option considering we didnt pay much for this lot of various turbo's and I saw a guy run one who said it was about as laggy as his HX40. I realize they arent a power house turbo, but for how hot my HX35 keeps getting vs the cost of twins, it seems like a decent option. I was also thinking that keeping it under 50 psi would not only help the turbo live, but also help my headgasket live, therefore keeping the budget low on this modification.

I might have to just do it and find out how good or bad it works.

I hope it works out for you. Nothing like taking a pile of parts and making it work.
