High Tech Turbo question

Has anyone who is running a High Tech Turbo, preferably someone with a 71 series turbo found that the wastegate opening pressure was set too low? I have a 71 series Quick Diesel 64/14. I was told the factory setting was 40 psi, and I can't get it to pull over 35. My old hybrid would pull over 40.

Mine was set at 45psi right out the box. You can install a adjustable boost elbow to bump it up some, but you may just need bigger sticks....those 3's are small for a 64 compressor.

I have the EXACT same problem with mine. Just bought an HTT quick Diesel 64/14 and can't get the thing over 35 psi. I emailed them and they kinda didnt answer my question directly. As far as I'm concerned it cant be lack of fuel, with mine at least, because mine still smokes like crazy with everything on full tilt! If anybody knows anything please do tell!

I agree. My 64 was too much turbo for 150 sticks and a hot pump. I've always thought that 200 sticks and a 64 would be a good match.

If you guys can't reach the wastegated setting then you can just do what I did- unscrew the boost elbow and replace with a 1/8 pipe plug =P

Definately too much turbo for 100hp sticks. A SS62 would be great for you...or some 200hp sticks. Unless you tow.

The turbo comes with an adjustable wastegate. The wastegate is either set to open at to low of boost pressure or for some reason I'm not driving it enough with enough fuel/heat which I can hardly beleive, not menchon that HTT knew my mods and recommended this turbo. I may start playing with the wastegate settings, if to no avail, HTT is going to need to help me out here. 1800 bucks is a lot of money for a turbo that is sized too big and now I'm stuck with it.

A 64 mm turbo really needs fuel to make it perform...... But remember that boost doesn't equal power, but proper mods do. You can play with the wastegate settings and see if you get more boost but you may need more fuel for it to perform.

Im alittle new at this...will my truck still smoke at WOT, alot, like "black out an intersection smoke" , if my turbo is underfueled??? Also, I dont know if this makes any difference but when I ordered my 100 horse injectors from scheids they said that their injectors were equivalent to most other companies 140-150h.p. injectors.
Thanks for any help

Oh i forgot to add...I emailed HTT and they said "you are putting more fuel through that truck than what a 14 litre big cam Cummins can use in an over the road truck"...I value all of your opinions I'm just throwing this out there as a quote from the manufactuer themselves.
Again any help is much appreciated!!

Well I am getting similar responses form High Tech. They are saying I need to step up to a 66 because I have so much fuel, and I'm going you have got to be kidding. I'v got everyone on the board here saying I don't have enough fuel for the 64/14 and now HTT wants me to move up to a 66. Look, in my opinion boost is for one thing basically and that is to match the amount of fuel to keep exhaust temps down and smoke minimal, granted without compund/series or variable vain crap you are going to have heavy smoke coming out of the hole with the throttle down. My thought at this point is to move down to a SS13 turbine housing and stay with the 64 compressor wheel. If that doesnt work then go down to the super stock 62/14. Does anyone agree with that? I am sick and tired of slow spool and low boost.

Tonight I am going home, pulling the elbow off the compressor housing and plugging it with a pipe plug. Hopefully this will help me detrmine whether or not the wastegate is an issue or not. I also want to check exhaust back pressure. It's full 4 inch exhaust, but the muffler is not straight through but offset. Maybe I am having excessive backpressure. Going to pull the down-pipe out of the 4 inch exhaust and let it go straight out. Hopefully these checks will help. I'v already pressured up the boost side and bore scoped the engine. Running out of stuff to check.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I have a Quick Diesel 64/12 and mine spools up like crazy. I can fog out an intersection if I dump fuel real quickly before the turbo gets going.

I'm really don't like the smoke. I know, I know, I'm in the minority, but I'm going to put in a Helix 2 cam to see if it will reduce the smoke somewhat. Other than that, I am very pleased with my set-up.

Id love to hear your results with plugging the elbow...as far as the exhaust goes i dont think thats your problem because like i said i have the same turbo and my exhaust is a 4in->5in dual lake pipe setup and I can tell you flow is definetley not a problem with mine and mine wont build boost either.
