High Idle

This is a subject in which I'm not well versed. Anyway. while in Oregon at my daughters over Thanksgiving, I was loading some firewood in the truck and left it running. I knew I wouldn't be at it long and since it was about 28 degrees I figured I'd just let her idle. Well, I started loading wood and the truck had only been running for about 5 minutes when, to my surprise, she started idling faster all by itself. I kind of figured it must be some kind of warm-up cycle or something. I wish I had gone and looked at the tach to see the RPM's. I'm guressing it was around 1200 or so...my truck normally idles at 750 RPM.

Is this normal? At what temperature does the high idle occur? It did it off and on for probably 4 cycles. Maybe if I went and got my owners manual I could find out the answer to my question but it's more fun this way.

If you just started your truck it will go into "high idle mode" if the temps are low enough. I believe there is a description in the owners manual of when it will do that ad at what temp it engages.

Yup, after two minutes at a low temp after startup... it will auto engage the high-idle which I'm sure it went up to 1K.
