normally when its under 50 deg.F or so here my high idle will come on by itself a while after startup. the last couple days have been in the low 30's and now all of a sudden after the truck sits overnight i start it up and the idle shoots right to 1100 imediately. i have never noticed it do this before and i would think it would be bad for the engine as far as lubrication is concerned. i noticed this immediately as it hasnt done this in the past, although i cant remember back to last winter after i had got the truck.

is this normal? shouldnt it wait at least a few seconds before idling high when cold?

On a real cold day my truck and my fathers 03 do the exact same thing.

You know when the motor is realy cold when you crank it and it goes straight into a high ilde and you can hit the brake and it still won't idle down.

I can't comment if it's bad for the motor or not. It probley is but so is everything else. :) Im sure someone will chime in on that.

Well it is the way the controls are programmed to operate. Good, Bad or Indifferent.

There is a lot of residual oil left in the bearings from the last shutdown the oil flow is there immediately even if you do not see it on the pressure gage. So little chance of damage.

I am sure Dodge did not make that a function without input from Cummins so I think it is not an issue.

Here is how it "should" work....

below ~32*F auto ramp up to 1000 rpms after 2 minutes of running
below ~15*F auto ramp up to 1000 rpms instantly

The only way I know of to get the rpms to 1100 is with the manual cruise controlled throttle...

I will ramp my idle up to about 1100 after 15 seconds... I figure if it will do it by itself instantly I will be fine do it after 15 seconds...

maybee it is going to 1000 instead of 1100, im looking at it from standing outside the drivers door while starting it so my view could have been a little off if you know what i mean.

anyhow, it definately wasnt below 15 deg. outside. oh well i will wait for a warmer day and see if it still does it.

Mine does the same. When it is cold, but not extremely cold it will high idle after a couple minutes. When it is really cold outside, the high idle will come on as soon as I start the truck. I think it's fine that way.
