high idle feature does not work!
i had tsb 18-037-04 in march . i then assumed the high idle feature was enabled, but after reading here- that is the manual high idle feature that kicks in when it is cold outside. i know it does not work because i went outside tonight and cranked up the truck, turned on the cruise and hit set- it did not idle up. so i tried it again but hit accelerate-nothing.( i did not hit the brake or anything)
on my invoice from the dealer it says tsb 18-037-04 fast idle, poor fuel economy refer to tsb 18-004-04, out of calibration (whatever that means?)
preformed tsb 18-037-04
any insight? thanks

On the '04 Dmax I had there was a toggle switch under the dash, hit that and use the cruise buttons, and it would work.
Thanks.

the 03's must be diffeerent because mine does it by itself. Sometimes it takes a few minutes though. Although it was outside for about 12 hours without being plugged in @ 10 degrees or so ( thats cold for oklahoma ) and it instantly went to high idle.

drew03- i believe that is the "cold" high idle feauture. truck will automatically bump up rpm's on a cold day. mine does it too. that is where my confussion lies. i assumed that was the high idle feature enabled at the dealer under tsb 18-037-04. but it is not. the one enabled at the dealers, at least on the 04.5 and up trucks can be turned on by you. you are suppose to be able to turn on the cruise, then hit the set button and the rpm's should bump up to 1100 or so while in park with your foot off of the brake!

On the 04 trucks their is a manual high idle that has to be set by the dealer. When they go into your computer they have to specifically set it. I bet you that the tech did not know how to set it properly. Go back and get them to do it right.
Yes the trucks have a automatic high idle which kicks on if the out side air temp is cold and also the collant temp is below a certain point. This is on all the 3rd gens.

On the "older" CRD you had to upgrade the ECM and then go in with the DRB scan tool and "enable" the high idle. About 04.5-05, somewhere around there, you didn't have to "flash" the ECM anymore as the programming was already there, but you had to "enable" the feature with the DRB. Be forewarned though....anytime there is an update that requires the ECM to be "flashed", you will have to be sure the manual idle feature is "enabled" again....I'm guilty of the second one a couple of times.

When the High Idle feature is enabled at leat in the 2004.5's you have to turn the cruise control on and press set. The engine than goes up to about 1100 rpms.
Hope this helps.

I had the dealer install the hi-idle on my 98.5 a few weeks ago and it makes all of the difference in the morning. No more half-frigid cab after a 30-minute warmup. I can get toasty in 10-15 minutes!
I may install a recirculating heater on the defrost line to accompany the block heater and oil pan heater, then that ought to do it.

The hi-idle is just an ECM software install. I paid for an hour of shop labor at the dealer and had them look at a couple of other things while they were in there.
The recirculating coolant heater is a transfer pump with a heater built in. They range in price, mine was $45 from Carquest. On my wife's TDi Passat, it will generate enough heat to start defrosting the window after 60 minutes with the car off. The truck is a different matter; way more mass. It does make for instant cab heat, and that is really nice. Gotta let it run for an hour to 90 minutes.
Install the heater on the line from the engine to the heater core, and pigtail the 110v leads into your factory block heater. I did a little reroute with heater hose and some conduit.
Use a 3-way electrical cord splitter with a lighted male end to pull everything together. Run the factory block heater, recirc heater, and oil pan heater all into the 3-way. Some zip-ties to secure everything and you are good to go.
The lighted splitter gives you one cord hanging out so you can tell for sure if the power is on all the way to your truck when plugged in.
