high flow filter

Hi all ,this is a great site ,here's what I need feedback on. I purchased this beast "as signed" a few month's ago and lovin every shift, rattle and roar ;D ;D ;D .the truck came with a k&n filter[basic drop in replacement type] I've clean and reoiled it thinking that this is a great filter and another bonus to the purchase.................then I started reading this forum and payed special attention to the K&N postings ??? : :-[ :-X :- SO small particules are not good for my engine. I've used K&N in my gassers with no problems but wish to change to the preferred [DTR members ]choice. the only other mods would be small power box ....edge ez maybe ,but highflow clean air is goal that with the 4inch exhaust should be giving more than stock hp&tq I hope ??? please respond with advice. thanks 40% tow rig 60% daily driver

Re:high flow filter

I am a rookie around here to but have a Scotty II intake and have had no problems yet and I know the engine is getting more air and alittle better pedal response. I think most people are using a BHAF( big honking air filter), Scotty II, Ram Air and the K&N. You'll have more than enough reading on any of these filters by doing a search using the search button at the top of this page. You may want to talk to a person on this stuff and we have plent of great guys around here for that too! Wildcat diesel has the scotty II and Rod or Scott are great to talk with on the phone or via emails. Look into the links section and or the high performance/after market sections on. Good luck and God Bless! ;D

Re:high flow filter

I'm partial to the BHAF (Big Honkin Air Filter).
Available pretty much anywhere, but I prefer the Fleetguard variety (Cummins owns Fleetguard).
Dry paper filter.

List of part numbers from various manufacturers can be found in the Tech Facts link on the main site logo.

Template for the heat shield can also be found there, but many have ran the filter naked without problems.

I purchased a prefilter for it from www.outerwearsracing.com, keeps the big chunks out and is water resistant.

Here's a pic of my setup.
BHAF, prefilter and heat shield.

Just the Heatshield, which also serves as a mount to keep the filter from bouncing around.

I'm sure many will chime in with the Scotty II system, but as it uses an oiled filter, I'll pass at this time.
Maybe once my HP gets turned up to the point it will do some good, maybe I'll change my mind.

Re:high flow filter

Phox,
Is there a pipe in between the BHAF and the tube going to the turbo? If so, what size? Is the strap around the filter to hold it down, or to hold on the prefilter? Is the prefilter re-useable, or do you replace it everytime you replace the BHAF? I didn't notice a filter minder on yours, how often do you replace the filter? Sorry for all the questions, but I think this is the way I want to go, and I want to make I don't miss anything.

Thanks,
Darrin

Re:high flow filter

Some have used 4" PVC between the filter and the intake hose, but mine fit pretty good, so hose is just attached right to the filter.
The strap is just to hold the BHAF to the heatshield, keep it from bouncing around.
It's just 2 hose clamps, Home Depot didn't have one big enough, so I got 2 smaller ones and connected them.

(in my pic, the mounts for the straps were put on backwards, so the filter rests on the mounts instead of flat on the heatshield, the guy that built the mount for me riveted them in, but someday I am going to de-rivet them and put them back on the right way)

Prefilter is just a sock, open on both ends, that goes over the whole filter, and it is washable.
Made of nylon jacket type material.

I've heard of people getting upwards of 50,000 miles out of the filter, so I guess I'll change it the day I pay off the truck
Probably wash the prefilter every other oil change or so.
I put it in at 20,000 miles and my OEM filter was filthy disgusting,
but the filter minder hadn't moved a millimeter.
Not sure it works properly, or my stock airbox was so leaky that it never sucked vaccum.

There's nowhere for the filter minder to mount, unless I go the PVC pipe method.
Visual inspection is a lot easier than with the stock airbox, so IMHO, it's not really needed.

Hope that covered all the questions.
