High EGT's

I just want to start out by saying this is my first thread, but I read the threads on DTR daily and more that I read the newspaper.

Recently, I was pulling my 5th camping trailer up a steep canyon in Utah and my EGTs were off the charts. I have some of the basics upgrades on my truck w/ auto such as edge juice, mbrp exhaust, bd flex plate, tc, and valve body.

My question is, will I lower my egts more by adding an aftermarket turbo or by putting a water/methanol(Snow performance) on? I have read that the egts run higher with an edge and someday would like to get a smarty, but until then I am not sure which would be better and most effective. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

They would get up to 1500-1550, then I would let off the pedal and they would go down to 1200 and then shorty after would raise again. I have my edge alert set at 1400 and it was going off close to all the time up the canyon which is about 12 miles.

The year of truck would help. Fill out your sig so we know what you have...

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...e-t224847.html

I had an edge on mine with an old program, and the egt gauge was not reliable. (I had analog gauges as well)

I would add/modify my turbo, it does not have to be a racing/pulling turbo to upgrade. Call the guys at HTT and tell them what you need, they will put you in a good turbo. Order it from Lary in the DTR store, you'll save a few bills.

That edge will run hot, mine would make the EGT's go off the charts.

Welcome to the DTR, BTW...

If you have the money I would get a turbo to lower the temps. Both option will cool your temps, but the turbo will help you out all time, and give some all around performance rather than the water/meth just sometimes.

I'm in Utah, too, which canyon were you going up? The '05 has the stupid tow/haul button instead of the OD On/Off button like the other years, so what I did was buy the BD Overdrive Lockout module which allows me to lockout overdrive while going up steep grades. It keeps the RPMs up and the turbo spooled which keeps the temps down. It's not too expensive, somewhere around $200, and is a fairly straightforward install.

I was going up Fairview Canyon down in Sanpete County. It's a nice canyon once you get up on top.

Kparry1... Remember that what causes heat is insufficient air for the fuel you are putting into the cylinder. That said, to get more air run more RPMs, or run a bigger turbo. Either will assist in controlling temps. Caution about buying a turbo, make sure that you speak with one of the many experts about your application.... If it if large and makes big air but that is at 2200 RPM and up, that most likely will only make your problem worse, as low RPM it will actually make less air than your stocker. There is as always a balance point, and that should be determined by your use of the truck.
Good Luck

kparry1, you need to keep your rpm's up to keep the boost up so with that the egt's will be cooler. Try the ^^ od module lock out or pm me ( it's 1 wire to cut and set up on toggle). You can put a clamp on the hose for the wg and play with the tightness to control when it opens then you'll need a boost fooler, but you have to stay under 40-45psi of boost 'cuz of the plastic tanked ic (50psi &^^ tend to blow apart), or buy an '06 &^ which are all alum. (I paid $225 shipped).

Alot of info. but I used to be in your situation going to Vegas and back. I wouldn't let the egt's get above 1500, but that's me. Our trucks, stock, are okay to hit 1450 from what I've seen. One of my friends has a '05 also and out of curiousity installed a gauge, mind you his truck is stock.

kparry1, whats the elevation youre running along there? i know here in elko, the elevation is just over 5,000 feet. any grade around here takes you to around 8000 feet and with any load on my truck it tends to get hot. being a 6 speed i can control it a bit better. but i hardly tow anything. just a 1 ton toyota to the rocks and thats about it...

I'd like to hear about the overdrive lockout toggle switch setup and I'm sure a bunch of other '05ers would like to know as well! I figured it was doable but hadn't heard of anybody doing it and posting their setup, so I had to purchase the BD setup. My BD unit works great, but if you could do it for cheaper and it works, I'd go that route if I had to do it again!

I was sent this info. a few months ago and haven't done it to my truck yet.. before I forwarded the info., I wanted to make sure it worked. It doesn't, wrong wire diagram.. If anyone reads this and has a service manual for our trucks, please let us know. It's the 3-4 shift solenoid control...that wire can be set up on a switch...

On you bd set up, is it completely sealed up?? Is there a single wire plug in,like plugging in for the boost fooler type plug...should beable to tell which wire it involves for the solenoid...??
