I am going to do the high/lo mod on my truck. I know i need to tap and jump the two wires together under the steering column cover.

What exactly do I need to do this? Diode? Regular wire?

Anything else i need or should be aware of/know about?

Anybody experience or hear of any overheating/melting problems (with aftermarket housings)?

i just put hid's in my truck and i was going to do this since they draw less amps. i was just gonna use a relay but your sounds intriguing.

I used one of these type of wire taps. It worked fine for about 20 minutes and then one of the bulbs blew up really good. I'm not sure if I banged the bulb putting my harness in or what, I took it out and went back to stock.

Sorry the plug is for the daytime running lights I was using the picture to show the type of wire tap I used. I hit submit before my brain clutched in to add that.

if you realy want a no worry light improvement get the upgrade harness from lmc or summit, ect.
this takes the load oee the headlight switch and the dimmer swich giving them extended life and brighter lights also ! and it only cost app $50.00 , think of what a swich breakdown + install headace is worth !
after the harness get some flosser 9104 bulbs !

I just did the whole shibang, hitting a dear or something else would cost a lot more then new headlights and to me it was worth it to do it all out the first time. SilverStars and my headlight assemblies are great but for safety I will eventually install a relay to my headlights to take the load off of the dimmer switch

i already have the harness, and i have answered my questions from the original post with some extensive searching - well, all but one - do the housings (stock & aftermarket) stand up to the increased heat output?

I can't remember where I found out about it but on my 96 all it took was a 3M Scotch Loc, wire splice, under the steering wheel. Took about 5 minutes, two years and no problems. I know that it was on one of the Dodge diesel fourms.

If you want to do it right without the risk of blowing up bulbs and being on a dark highway without lights, check out one of the threads on the Sport Headlight conversion.

Its about 2/3 of the way down. You provide the the wires and labor and he provides high quality parts and instructions. I should have the kit any day now, then I'll be installing it all.

This mod netted me one blown bulb, one melted bulb, and a ruined headlight socked. The common (negative) pin on the bulb is not designed to handle the load of both filaments. A summit relay harness was installed at the time and fortunately allowed me to have one high beam for that drive home at 3 in the morning. You will be money ahead with a sport conversion and will have no need to hack up your wires for some short-lived improvement.

i punted a deer really good just recently and i did the the sport headlight conversion, as well as hid's but when i flick to high beam it turns off my low beam for some stupid reason

I just did my own headlight mod.
for background i have hid's in both the high beam location and the low beam location (sport headlights)

took the plastic off the bottom of the steering column and basically hooked a relay up from the ignition wire to the viliot/white wire giving it full time ground when the ignition is on. i then unplugged my DRL (daytime running lights) box which is located on the drivers side fender near the firewall.

so now i have 4 lights of hid goodness when my highbeam is on!! talk about lighting up the road!
