Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

Guys here's the link to find bio in your area. Sure is nice to throw in a few gallons that you know supports americans, didn't send any money to the middle east or contribute to foreign oil dependence, AND did your truck a favor. The extra lubricity, cetane, and reduction in smoke/emissions/smell is awesome!!

Click the part that says 'find petroleum distributors in your area' and the one that says 'retail fueling sites'.

www.biodiesel.org is a great site for info.

Re:Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

A friend of mine just got a load of B20 in a town about 10 miles out and came up with a question I didn't really have an answer to but told him I KNEW someone who would. It was you I thought of ;D. Anyway, the question is when runnin' with Bio Diesel, do you need to add an additive (like Power Service or something similar)? By what you say in your lead article here, one would think not.

Re:Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

Thats a complicated answer. That comes down to first of all whether or not you believe in additives, and secondly, what you use your additives for. For example, if you value the ability of your additive to disperse water in the event of getting a bad tank of fuel, then I would still dose with additives. If on the other hand you are only putting in additives to increase lubricity or cetane, the biodiesel has already done that for you. Most people I know throw in a few gallons of bio and dose the additives to the ratio for just the amount of dino diesel put in. IMO it can't hurt and I always do.

How does your friend like the B20 so far, and what kind of vehicle?

I'd like to get some of this. It might be cool to have my truck smell like french fries.

nw dave, i'm assuming those smileys means he likes the b20? Just curious how it ran in the truck. RedRam has filled up a few tanks of b20 but haven't heard much back from him yet.

Naw, the smilies were for finally latching onto a CTD. He's been searching for a long time. Hopefully, he'll have report on the fuel on Monday. He hauled some horses to Eastern Washington this weekend and should have something to say about it.

Re:Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

Hey Lightman,
I appreciate your getting the word out about biodiesel, I've been following some of your posts. I've been running b50 (splash blend) since the third fill up. I get it in drums from a local distributor and pump it in my driveway. Love it, although there is a marked drop in mileage 'cause of the btu thing. I ran a full tank of b100 and went from 21mpg (full dino) to 16or 17mpg-both were highway trips. Virgin soy BD. Since running b50 I average 16-16.5, but that's a lot of funky Vermont hilly driving with quite a few shifts. Still worth the price. Keep up the good work! Bryan

Re:Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

Bryan, no prob, glad to spread the word about domestically produced fuel that benefits all! Is that burke oil? World energy soy bio? The last I heard all of it was being made from recyled oil stock now, or at least part of it. Bio distributors might not be aware or telling customers, but let me tell you, all of the bio now is much darker than 2 years ago when it was all virgin soy. No matter, the recycled oil bio is better. Just as clean, and instead of averaging 47-49 cetane, recycled is usually 55-57 cetane, with slightly higher btu 8) I keep three drums in the garage at all times =] Bryan, email me and I'll fill you in about dessicating breathers for the drums if you don't have one.

Bryan can you comment on the difference in running condition from straight dino to blends of bio on your 03 cummins? Folks here are hungry for Cummins bio experience, when all I have to offer is 25,000 miles of B100 in my tdi, and 2 years of b20 in my MB.

Folks did you read this post?? ;D Here is finally someone with an '03 running biodiesel. Not only biodiesel but 50% biodiesel!!!!! Again, as I've stated above, with blends of 20% or lower, you have NOTHING to worry about. As I also said, I believe you can run b100 in the cummins with no problem, but 20% is undeniably safe.

I agree about b100 mileage. While it runs so smoothly and quietly in my TDI, the power is down a bit and mpg drops from 46-47 to 43-45. On b20 I have experienced little or no drop in mileage. I drive 1000 miles per week and calculate every tank. I drove 748 miles from sarasota to new orleans on one tank, averaging 49 miles per gallon on b20, 75-80mph with a/c!

Re:Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

I did not see any Canadian manufacturers/producers.
Is there info for that?
Knowing how 'green' the tree huggers like to be up here, I am sure they must be doing this up here by now. Just cannot find anything about it.
Lightman, any info?

Thanks

Scotty

Re:Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

Lightman,
I read a LOT before I committed to pouring this stuff into my tank, and there is extensive research with bio and the Cummins 5.9's-here's some links:http://www.missouri.edu/~pavt0689/biofuel.html http://www.mauibiodiesel.org/friends.htm-shows two long term DC trucks-one at 154K. http://www.me.iastate.edu/biodiesel/Pages/bio10.html -very informative, things to be aware of like cld weather data, etc http://www.uidaho.edu/bae/biodiesel/..._research.html -This one is a must-extensive res'ch with CTD's.

Thats good tarpilot. I'd say A LOT doesn't even begin to describe how much I"ve read or talked about Bio in the last few years. Theres a lot to learn if you're the investigative type, or you can just benefit from someone like me, who's done the research, and makes an educated recommendation.

Let me check on canada scotty.

Re:Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

Sorry Lightman, I never answered your query earlier, got off on a tangent.
I would say the bio runs quieter, not drastically but absolutely noticeably-this is due to the combustion properties as compared to dino-I think it has a longer and more even complete burn.
The motor DEFINITELY feels smoother, like it's being lubed in the pistons, and guess what????
Also, and obviously, cleaner emissions and it smells less.
But anyone running this stuff must be prepared to pay more and suffer a mileage penalty. I think at B20 neither would be too bad, and if we all were running B20 we would make a huge impact on our farms and be less in need of ...foreign oil.
By the way, when you calculate the price of a gallon of fuel, think of how much of our income is going to ensure that the supply is not interrupted.

Re:Here's how to find Biodiesel in your area

Good to hear Tar, the same results in both of my cars. The MB is so quiet at idle its hard to tell its a diesel, when on b20. The tdi is about the same noise at b20 but at b100 is way quiet. The smell with the high blends is so sweet!!
