Exclamation Here we go again - How good are you guys??

Ok...long story here. Replaced dead VP44 with rebuilt from Bosch (Diesel Inj. Warehouse) and got it back up and running. Replaced fuel filter but not lift pump. One cold morning about 3 weeks after replacement, started truck (no issue there) and started to go...then no power. Kinda like dead pedal issue. Limped to highway to get home. Had pedal floored with no response then all of a sudden - pop - instant power like a light switch. Ran fine the rest of the way home - about another 8 miles. Since then I have replaced the lift pump for the older one (which has been replaced once already about 30k miles ago). there was no pressure from the old one. New one now gives me 14 at idle at lift pump and about 11 at IP. I know the pressures drop when ya get on it but I rarely do stomp on it. I tried to reset the APPS by the procedure found on here thinking it was a dead pedal issue. No luck - still have same issue, doesn't go...no power. ONLY code is 1693. The 460 code went away after disconnecting the batteries and draining the capacitors. I am stuck now for I am really afraid it is leaning towards the IP again. I do have 13.4 VDC at pin #7 so I know the IP is getting voltage. PLEASE HELP!! I am getting to this point now! --->

Question for you, you state:

"Since then I have replaced the lift pump for the older one (which has been replaced once already about 30k miles ago). there was no pressure from the old one."

What were your fuel pressure numbers when you were getting the dead pedal?

Just after that issue on the highway I checked it when I got home. I was reading zero psi at lift pump when idle. I do not have a guage inside of the cab and the only way for me to know is when I hook it up to the ports manually. Crude but still effective. I have had lift pump issues before, actually running a long trip just on the IP alone.

Is there a port or hook-up somewhere between the IP and the injectors to check actual pressure coming from the IP?

I have mine sitting on the test port on the IP. From what you've said, I think you have a bad IP. Sorry.

Hopefully there is a good warranty on the new pump.

What kind of pressures would I expect to see from the IP? That test port on the output side by the six lines?

It's pretty clear the injection pump is dead/dieing. No pressure probably ruined the diaphragm inside the pump.

Dodge dealers have a test cable that hooks in place of ecm. It allows the VP44 pump to run on its own. If pump(engine) runs, it is good then rest of electronics are messing it up.

Industrial Injection in Salt Lake City UT has a 1 year warranty on their pumps. Spoke to them today and they said if I sent it to them they will test it and replace it if damaged. Bought it in Late August and installed in early September. Good to hear but still down a truck for a while...ugh.

I am interested in the test cable to plug into pump. Where does it go to and where can I get one?

I don't think trying to check the output side would be a good idea. Any gauge in the line would damp the 17,400 PSI (I think) impulses that the lines from the IP to the injectors carry.
Please do SOMETHING to monitor the fuel pressure from the lift pump to the IP. I built something for under $15.00, and about an hour.

Running the IP with no input pressure seems to be the kiss of death for the VP44.

Dozer, have any idea on a part number or what it looks like?

I would love to get my hands on one as well.

I had this problem with my 01. Are you using any fuel additives, or better yet what fuel are you using(which company). I noticed that using fuel from certain retailers increased these symptoms. The anemic performance when the VP44 era trucks are cold is not uncommon; however, the amount of time that it takes for regular performance to return shouldn't be more than a mile of driving. I would highly suggest that you pursue other options. This is how it went with mine: After becoming upset with the same problem, I had a FASS 150 installed. This ensured that adaquate fuel pressure would get there. As monitored by a gauge I would recieve about 17-18 at idle and no less than 14 at WOT. I still had some symptoms of the dead throttle, I started adding the Stanadyne fluid that bosch recommends and I had no issues from then on, It will all depend on how far along the VP44 or lift pump is from going out. Bad replacement parts, while uncommon still happen. Additionally, you will notice that with the FASS and the fuel additive you are getting better MPG and performance. I would watch the engine temp gauge, does this problem continue once your truck has reached the 140-150 deg range, this is a question I have for you.
