HELP valve adjust

this is my first time doing a valve adjust and it was going smoothly. i used the timing pin to find TDC for #1 and followed the instructions. .010 intake and .020 exhuast.
adjusted #1 I&E #2 I #3 E #4 noticed that the valve spring was VERY compressed... i am trying to gap it but cannot get a .010 gap even with the adjuster all the way out? what is the deal? #5 E looks like it is the same way... i'm stuck what do i need to do?

You should adjust: Intake 1-2-4, Exhaust 1-3-5
Rotate engine 360* and adjust: Intake 3-5-6, Exhaust 2-4-6

Sorry but I cant help you... Valve adjustments mess with my head to much so I ended up taking my truck to Dodge here in town for a reasonable price. (About a year ago)

In your first post, you said you were trying to adjust #4 exhaust. Was that a miss print?

it actually was ment to be read #3 E then #4... i was explaining what was going on but didn't indicate intake or exhaust. i see that it was consufing. sorry. anyways i found that i could push the timing pin at any time i wanted too, seems i was not all that close to TDC (no wonder they were taking so much adjustment) after doing a quick search and finding that using the alternator when the intake on #6 is rising (closing) and the exhaust just starts to drop, i am going to be TDC on the #1 cylinder. at that point i adjusted according to the directions in the sticky. once i had the motor to the correct position it was simple! i figure my next adjust will take 30minutes.. if i take my time. thanks for the help, truck runs much better. not sure how many of the first 5 i did were out but of the last 7 i had to adjust 5 of them, and 3 were out pretty bad.

Sounds like the timing pin is broke. Looks like you got 'er figured out, though.

Speaking of timing pin since this thread is pretty well done anyways, anyone know how to properly adjust it?

There is no "adjustment" for the timing pin. When you push the pin in
it just goes into a hole in the pump gear, a precise fit.
That is what locates TDC on number 1. Pull out the pin and rotate
the engine 180* and you have TDC on number 6. Remember 2 crank
rotations equals 1 cam rotation.

It is very easy to break the tip off the timing pin. The whole thing
is some type of plastic.

Incorrect. The housing the pin mounts in is adjustable.

To reset it if it's been removed, find TDC using the valve drop method, set the crank at TDC, and put the pin in the hole. Tighten the bolts on the housing and you are all set.

find TDC using the valve drop method make sure you know what that means, and how to do it, or you timing pin will be the least of you worries

just when't and look in the sticky, couldn't find it! So....just make sure you get a service manual and read up on it be for you begin

Flash.
