Help!

I was adjusting trans bands and the manual says to back off lock nut 5 turns.I needed to back it off way more to get the adjuster to click 72 inch pounds. I had to run the adjuster way in before it would hit 72 and then backed off the proper turns. Is this right? Are my bands way out or worn badly? ---Or---- should I have backed out 5 on the nut then turned them both back 5 in and set it to 72 in lbs then snug nut to 25 ftlbs?

Also is brown fluid the result of excessive clutch material worn into the fluid? My fluid was brown.

Sounds like it was badly out of adjustment. Back off the locknut as much as you need to tighten the adjuster. The main thing is that it is the band that is getting tight and not the locknut while you are torquing.

From what I've seen, a lot of them didn't seem to be adjusted properly from the factory. Now that you've got it right, it may be good like that forever. The other possibility is that you have a hydraulic problem causing that band not to apply firmly, and it is slipping and wearing prematurely. That will just have to be dealt with if it happens. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you have a decently firm shift into second gear and it doesn't feel like it's slipping in second, it should be good for a while.
