help on preload SHIMMING a getrag 360
ok heres what I have ,i had attemtped rebuilding my getrag 360 4wd tranny,installed new bearings and sync rings and two new shifting forks, and now I'm alittle confused on the preload shimming...I have searched and searched for info, and still not found what I'm looking for.
OK i went by the manual of taking the measurements and subtracting them from one another..and heres what I came up with...
Output shaft-- case to race measured .220
depth of retainer case--- .247
countershaft---case to race--.0058
countershaft retainer case depth--.085
now I subtracted the difference of those and came up with this:
outputshaft-- .027
countershaft-- .079
NOW do I add this (.006 to .008) addtional shims to what I came up with? that I have read in the manual?
THEN this makes the TOTAL amount of shims I use ...correct??

Yes you need a shim stack of .027 + (.006 to .008) = .033 to .035 for the output shaft. A shim stack of .079 + (.006 to .008) = .085 to .087 for the counter shaft.

Whats the deal with getting the bellhousing lined up right?? I have read some posts about this...I just can't bolt it back up and be done with it?...whats the problem I'm gonna run into here?

I give up...AARRGG!!!! I can't get this dang thing setup....I checked my math again...measured again..did it all over again...and still its to tight...I can't even turn the input shaft!!! The output shaft spins ok..but there seems to be way too many shims on the countershaft?? what gives?
I think I'm gonna take it to a tranny guy and see if he can figure it out?

It should move easier than that. Reassembling the Getrag without replacing the bearings requires 0.00" preload , and is easy to move. .006-.008" of preload is not a large amount.... Shouldn't add THAT much preload to not allow the input to spin by hand.

yeh mine was brand new a week ago, everything inside and it was easy to spin. as a piece of advice i would set it up as tight as i can to keep the pocket bearing from humping up under massive load from lauching and breaking teath off the imput shaft gear and the corresponding counter gear which is exactly what went wrong with my last one. set to loose and the pocket bearing/mainshaft humped up at that timpken bearing. so set it tight.

i just rebuilt mine and shimmed it to .08s n it spins nice. at first my input wouldn't spin but once i laid it back down i gave the nose of the input a tap with a hammer and freed it up. i think it was just from all the weight sitting on the nose bearing.
