Post Help for a Newbie

I am looking into getting my first diesel truck, more than likely a 4th Gen RAM 2500, is there anything i should know about the 4th gen rams, or diesel trucks in general? I work in the Oil and Natural Gas fields, and my company has a few diesels in its fleet, (all fords, and if im not mistaken, they are all 6.0L). As well, Ive heard the automatic transmissions in the rams are little better than junk...is this true? If so, is the same true for a stick shift? Thanks.

You might get a better/quicker response in the 4th gen forum:

I really, really like my 4th gen. The trans is solid (both auto and manual) as long as you aren't thinking of some substantial power mods (Dodge hasn't built a "bad" tranny since the 47RE tapered off in '03, but even then the one in my last truck held up just fine to everything I threw at it).

The biggest question with the 4th gen (and late 3rd gens) is should you delete the emissions or not? I think it depends on your desire to keep the powertrain warranty intact and how you will use the truck. Stock, the emissions aren't set-up for these trucks to be "grocery getters". If you commute daily with it in slow traffic or make lots of short trips you're going to clog the emissions and get terrible fuel mileage. Delete it though, and that problem goes away. If you use the truck like it was meant to be then deletes are a matter of preference:

+ Better mpgs, cleaner engine oil, lower egts, more power & predicable power.

- powertrain warranty in serious trouble, may not pass emissions in some states, relinquish your Sierra Club membership .
