Help me understand the smoke obsession.
I know I am the minority here. I love diesel power and sound but I just don't get the obsession with the black cloud most have. I can't count how many posts I see asking how to get more smoke. I'm trying to prevent smoke, I just don't like blacking out the road. What is the thrill?

Its hard to explain really. I dont want lots of smoke, just enough to have a little cloud on start up and a little bit whenever I shift up a gear or lay into it. Lots of smoke the odd time is ok, but it gives diesels a bad name, so I dont do that often anymore. Shows whos boss taking off from a stop though I think when Im smoking a bit and every other little car isnt.

You wanna show em who's boss, let the air outta one of you rear tires and then throw your drink at em. Plus when you take off sparks and rubber will fly around. Then you'll be the only guy out there with a flat and and a shiner when the soccer mom wearin a soda blacks your eye.

I agree, smoke sucks. Most people that have been in the game a while are tired of the smoke and do everything they can to limit it. I have a little saying that goes like this...
"Billowing black smoke on a near-stock diesel is the same as an 18 second ricer with a 6" exhaust tip."

Smoke has a place, but IMO not much on the street. My last truck had a super-laggy turbo for a while, coupled with a six-speed and a triple stack. I could black out lanes of highway at will.
It sucked for me, though, as I couldn't use the power my truck made. I had to drive like the throttle was an egg-shell to keep it from smoking when things were turned up. I eventually got a smaller turbo and was more happy.
I live in a congested area where every third car is a Prius, plus 1-800-EXHAUST billboards are posted everywhere. I don't want to have to get my truck inspected in a state that doesn't require them.
So, no smoke for me on this build. Small turbo to start, then on to twins!
