Help me pic a torque converter

Ok so here's the deal. When I have the money I will be doing a fully built tranny probably from DTT but that will be a long way off.

I just traded some power heated tow mirrors for a slightly used ATS towing edition valve body. When I install this I would also like to install a better torgue converter.

I am hoping to prolong the life of my transsmission. I would like a torgue converter that will provide the best mileage possible and also stand up to added power and heavy foot.

So what would you guys suggest, keeping in mind that I am not rich Thanks in advance.

Well if you're looking at DTT for a tranny why not look at them for a converter?

Ya maybe I'll go talk to them tomorrow, I won't be buying a tranny for a year or so but Im going to do the valve body and tourqe convertor for now so I'll see what they have.

Ive read stuff on here about duoble disc and tripple disk converters. Whats the difference?

The Lock-up clutch in the converter.

You have a single disk and Triple disk converter.

Basic logic says "More surface area= more holding power"

But I know from talking to DTT when I had my auto they've built singles that held 800+ RWHP.

Its all how you treat it.

I DONT recommend puting a triple disk in as you're only running your stock shafts and I bet sooner or later when you hit lockup you're going to twist that shaft.
You have more chances doing it w/ a triple disk compared to a single disk.

Call and talk to Stephan (I think) @ DTT very nice guy will help you out!

Triple disks IMO would be better when hauling heavy and pushing some good ponys (HP), or hooking to the sled in high classes.

one has 2 discs and one has 3 the tripple disc has more surface area therefore more holding power

So I guess also a tripple disc would get better mileage since it has more holding power, but not neccesary with what Ive got so far. Soory for asking a bunch of stupid questions I just dont want to go in there not knowing what Im talking about.

No they'd both get the same mileage.

Once its in lock up, its in lock up. Your ratio changes when its in lockup reguardless if its a single/triple.

Triple adds WEIGHT # tho.

If you're converter slips thats when you'd be losing MPG.

A triple disk will theoretically hold stronger but it is the same if a single is in lockup.

Only difference is if you have 2X,XXXLBs on the back with a single/triple the triple has more surface area so more holding power when you hit lockup

The mialage shouldn't be affected much on triple or single, but more of what type of fluid coupling it has, how tight or loose the converter is. What do you plan on doing with the truck, Tow, race, daily drive, stock turbo? I have a DTT single disc that I just got rebuilt in Jan i might be selling soon if your intrested.

Hmmm, I would be interested but I cant afford one now thats why Im just doing the tourqe convertor and valve body. I use this truck as my daily driver to and from work hauling tools and lumber on a regular bassis and towing once in a while.

Myth. All else being equal, a single disc and triple disc will have the exact same holding power. The purpose of a clutch pack is to improve longevity and smoothness, not absolute holding power.

Anyone want me to explain how this is true, or do you already see it?

Just like twin disc clutches it gives it more area to wear away and the longivity is improved.

Im maybe $600 they rebuilt it this Jan

How much power can a stock converter hold without slipping. With the upgraded valve body is a tc necesary? It porbably is with whats on my truck right now or it will be for sure with what I plan. I plan to get some formula 1 injectors when I can afford them and then a turbo and maybe headstuds and o-rings if necesary down the road.
