HELP!!! MAP Sensor Problem!!!!

Does anyone know how to check if a MAP sensor is working properly? Is there some sort of procedure using a multimeter? I don't wanta go out and buy one if it's not the MAP and it is the Banks Ottomind. Yeah, yeah, I know it's a Banks and not an Edge or a Smarty. Right now I'm not intrested whats better, I just need to know how to check the MAP. But believe me, if it's not the MAP and the Ottomind is getting hinky, Edge Comp here I come...................

Check the pin in the center (if it was a smiley face it would be the mouth), it should have .5 v with key on. one should have 5 volts the other is ground.

Thank you. Yes, I confirmed on the plug that one pin has 5v's, the middle is the return signal, so it shows nothing (on the plug) and the the other outer pin is the ground. So with the key the plug shows all that I just stated. The problem is what happens to the 5v's when it enters the MAP sensor? Or is the 5v's being affected by the Ottomind box before it gets to the MAP sensor, when the engine is running. So I need to know how to test the MAP sensor itself. That way I know to either buy a new sensor or revert to stock and save some money for the Edge Comp...............

you need to back probe the sensor plug while it is plugged in to the map sensor.

Not sure why you're leaning towards the MAP sensor - I find that mine needs to be cleaned out about every 6 to 9 months. I keep a clean spare in the truck. When I get the check engine light I will pull the current MAP, swap in the clean MAP, and when I get home use carb cleaner to thoroughly clean out the old MAP. Then it goes back in the truck for the next round. I believe the code is a 1693 each time this happens.

BTW - I had a new MAP shipped to me from the Cummins dealer. I paid less than $60.00 and it was waiting on me when I got to work the next day. Local dealer wanted $99.00.

Good luck...

Thanks guys. It was the MAP sensor. But it just needed a good cleaning like Kycatpower suggested.
