Help with fuel sending unit on 98

I have my tank on the ground it has a custom steel tank with suppoedly the stock sending yunit in it . The gauge is jumping all ove r the place so am trying to change it. have the tank out the unit says carter on top. I think it is stock part.. But I cant figure out if it is aupposed to twist out or if it is just sticky and I need to pry it up... HELP truck is in a bad place to leave it to long immobile

thanks Iam also thinking of moving the custom tank to my 97 bfrom my 98 but the dodge dealer says the sending units are diferent year to year. any one know if the wireing will hook year to year and work properly.

If it's indeed a "stock type" install, the big ring around the top twists off....and yes, there are different pn level units so I'm not sure on the second question.
