At dealer need advice on what their doing

Sorry tried to change the title to "At dealer need advice on what their doing"

Long story short, fluctuating fuel pressure wacho 16psi idle to 9psi for no reason. Trans not shifting normal but still holding 3rd and 4th locked. No codes via the key method. Poor fuel mileage 12.5 mpg hand calculated mostly city driving 3:55 gears 265 tires, this is down from about 15.5mpg average city driving, best tank ever was about 17.5 with mostly hwy driving.

Got the call as usual from the dealer nothing wrong no codes in the ECM or PCM or anywhere else if that's possible, this is a different dealer and they were really trying to help me, last dealer just wanted my deposit for warranty and out the door I go.

They did say the fuel filter cap was loose and tightened it and thus causing the fluctuating fuel pressure as it was drawing in air causing the low power and poor fuel mileage (could that be true???) Driver said before and after they were tightened was noticeable, but I still haven't driven it.

No problems with the trans via codes 47re and I'm going to believe them but the last shop said no problems with the fuel system but there were problems with the trans, let the shop mechanic drive the truck home and back and no problems found(I don't think he owns a truck so it's free transportation for him). Now the fluid is still pinkish but showing it's age, but not burnt smelling.

They wanted to do a pressure injector cleaner for $200 but wait the parts for this cost $130 so it's really a good deal. A new flash that ups the throttle response and fuel mileage $95. A valve job, lashing the valves for $225. I ask about a service for the trans, it is due and that was only $150 including filter and band adjustment not too bad considering every shop in town I called either didn't know about the bands or said I didn't have any with that trans but still wanted $189 to do the work.

So after reaching deep into my pocket I ended up getting the trans serviced and the valves adjusted (kicking myself on the valve job but...) and they are going to "throw" in the FLASH at no charge. Anyone know what that's all about?

Truck is in my sig, stock except for an EZ and gauges, well fuel gauge is in the rest are waiting patiently until my warranty expires in 19 days, then it's game on.

Sorry for the long post but any advice on the flash or the benefits I'll see on the valve job, I couldn't see spending half the money on an injector cleaning if I'm just going bigger (hopefully) in the next few months.

Thanks again.

The trans fluid should be red. If its pink then you got water or something in it and thats really bad.

I dont think the injector cleaning is a great deal, esp with jerk-type injectors (pump plunger opens the injector), as it only addresses half the problem- cleaning, and does nothing for pop pressures.

$225 for a valve adjustment? I am in the wrong business. You get any K-Y or Vaseline with that? I wouldnt think it should be over $100. I charge $50 to show up with my toolbox in your driveway, and it takes me a little under an hour. I have less overhead than the dealer, but I wouldnt think it's that much

IF (ephasis here on the IF) the fuel filter lid was loose, it would be leaking, but upon shut down, I guess it could let some air in, giving you some rough urnning til the system bled itself out. The 24 valve engines are SOOO much easier to bleed than the 12valvers. I dont think the effect would be long lasting, but what do I know? I'm not a certified technician; I just possess common sense and a fair understanding of how diesels work.

Cant help you on the tranny, other than to say if the other shops didnt know it even had bands, it's good you didnt let them do it. I do know if stuff isnt right, it can suck your MPGs into the basement.

Given that the Fuel Filter is between the lift pump and the VP44, I would stay that if the lift pump is working, you would have fuel spraying all over the place!

With DC ATF4 you can not use color to determine its condition, as it is a little dark right out of the bottle. There is a TSB regarding this. SNOKING
