HELP!5.9 Injector

Here is the deal I am out of town, about 700 miles from home, and won't return home until Sunday. I always buy name brand diesel, but had an issue arise buying some from HEB. I have used theirs before with no issue. I drove to about 2/3 of a tank and noticed a noise.

The noise is not there at idle in or out of gear, although idle is SLIGHTLY rougher than normal. The noise is a tapping "metalic" sound only under light acceleration, but it is not noticible under normal driving. I have noticed a small white cloud on startup, but nothing after that. It did not do that before.

Thinking it might be bad diesel I filled up with Shell, but it is still there. I normally BABY the truck very slow acceleration, drive fairly slow, occasional light loads never over 8k, etc. It only has 30k on the 5.9 liter. I just changed the Amsoil, filter, oil, and diff fluids.

I called the dealer today, back home, to get it in on Monday first thing. He mentioned that if it is an injector that it COULD scar the piston. I have been working on gas engines all my life, and have never heard of this before. Is this true? How can an injector scar the piston? Is it ok to drive the 700 miles home pulling my 6k lbs boat?

I think it might have started from Diesel Kleen (I think that is is). I never used it, was recommended by a friend. Bought some at WallyWorld (Grey bottle) and put the recommended in.

It was after that this started. New fuel filter 5k miles ago. Could this cleaner have dislodge some contaminants that passed the filter and clogged the injector?

Any cleaner you guys recommend?

Oh and should I take it to Dodge or Cummings. My dealer already said over the phone "are you sure you did not get bad diesel". I know where that is going and how they intend to play that one out. Should I not waste the time or at least let them look at it and tell me it was caused by bad fuel?

It will only be warrantied if you use a Chrysler dealer. Drain the fuel bowl before you take it in to make sure there is no water in it. If you have a good dealer, they wouldn't say anything even if it did. I would hook it up first though to a load (10,000 lbs. or over) and work the engine hard for 20-30 minutes. It's amazing how many times this clears up people's rough idles, knocks, etc.

Your truck will store in the PCM any water in fuel counts. So if you have been getting contaminated fuel and the WIF light has been coming on you may have a problem. If that's not an issue you shouldn't have a problem getting injectors replaced under warranty. The Starscan will show any injectors that are not working properly. It will also scan for any DTC's that may have been set while driving. Dealer will check set point pressure and actual pressure, fuel return from injectors if excessive will cause hard starting and white smoke. HPC tubes and limiting valve leakage can cause hard start or smoke. Updating the PCM to latest flash file will help in some hard start issues. FYI There is a new Heavy Duty Filtration KIt - MOPAR Retrofit or Add On Parts Available. Refer to TSB14-003-09

Thanks Big Iron. No WIF lights have come on.

I assume the parts you listed may be purchased and installed? Do I need all of them or am I better of going with an aftermarket solution such as Amsoils, or other lift pump filter combo?

If I do need injectors and decide to buy the F1 injectors will that void the Dodge warranty, or are they considered a "OEM" replacement. I was looking at the 1.65, because I just want the economy and slight tow advantage.

About the Cummins dealer. I too believed the overall package was Dodge's thus it must go to the Dodge dealer. I co-worker took his to the Cummins dealer and they fixrd it under warranty. He advised friends of his have done the same and that is how he learned about it.

The weird things is I had the same thing happen to me. I run power service injector cleaner grey every once in a while and never had any problems. Ran some the other day and had the rough idle. Put fresh fuel in and its back to normal.

If it's just a "slight" noise and a "slight" rouge idle you should be fine for the trip back. If it was something truly wrong your ears would hurt listening to it.

Does it sound like this or is it worse?

I believe this guy got some bad fuel... couple tanks later everything was fine again.

Try to see if you can find some Bio-blend for the trip back. Around here Love's Truck Stops have 5% blend in all their diesel. If I can't find a Bio-blend then I run Wal-Mart 2-cycle oil ~.6oz per gallon. Really quiets my injector rattle.

Ok.
Dealer looked at it and said #5 injector. Since I bought the truck used the previous owner loaded a program in it and Chrysler will not warranty the repair. They are quoting $1100 for the 1 injector with $190 of that labor and $95 for the flash back to stock settings.

I asked about rebuilt or aftermarket injectors and the told me "It MUST be bought from a Chrysler dealer for them to warranty repair in the future". I have always been told that the dealer can not insist you buy from them. As long as the parts are up to the manufacturer's specs it may be used.

The reason I ask is I am somewhat ok with letting the dealer install them all for $190 a pop and then I use the F1's. My question is can I use the F1's aren't they technically rebuilt injectors? Does anyone know where I can find the federal law outlining the use of parts meeting OEM specs?

Thanks..

Try checking the SEMA website, they should have the exact information about the use of aftermarket parts on vehicles and how manufacturers can not void warranties based on the use of aftermarket parts unless they can prove the aftermarket parts specifically caused the malfunction.

"The Magnuson-Moss Warranty – Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act of 1975 protects consumers from such fraudulent activity by new car dealers. Under this Act, aftermarket equipment that improves performance does not void a vehicle manufacturer’s original warranty, unless the warranty clearly states the addition of aftermarket equipment automatically voids your vehicle’s warranty or if it can be proven that the aftermarket device is the direct cause of the failure."

I smell a rat at the dealer. Any downloaders are VIN locked and whom ever you go the truck basically turned their tuner into an expensive paper weight. Not saying it not possible but seems like they are doing everything they can these days to not cover a warranty. And that is high way robbery. what they want for one. 6 injectors costing more than a new motor?????

injctors are easy to replace if you are mechanicaly inclined. if you are tell them to take a hike and replace the injectors yourself.
