what the heck?

hey guys...

took the truck to the dodge dealership because of the oil leak, and the not starting when its warm.

well they went through it. said the breather is leaking, and that its 700 bucks to fix that, as it is no longer on recall status

in terms of not starting when its warm... they said the motor has no compression and needs a complete rebuild. as it says in my thread, a cummins with 150k miles and it needs a rebuild but runs fine?! I'm thinking ********.

They also said the turbo is shot, and the vanes rub on the inside of the compressor when u rub it by hand.

oh, the exhaust manifold is cracked too.

the old man wants to know... is there anyone that makes basic crate motors for these? i guess if the turbo is bad, it needs a new one of them too. he wants roughly 400 ish hp so he can properly tow his trailer and have a camper in the bed

the other problem is, there arent really any diesel shops in our area. if anyone knwos of any in the lebanon new hampshire area...

heres the thread i posted on the oil leak.
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=102247

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

You can buy a complete rebuilt engine from Cummins for around $11.000.00 but Probably $12.000.00 after all is said and done,,, BUT that's not Installed ,,That's delivered to your door,,
Around $12.500.00 From Jaspers. Your Better off rebuilding yours,,
If I was you I would get a second opinion on the engine. I just swapped mine and got a HECK of a deal on one on eBay, NEW not a rebuilt engine with 8525 miles on it for $2.300.00 COMPLETE with turbo and ALL,,, Could not pass it up.
Good Luck

First off, are you sure that the engine needs to be rebuilt? The hard starting when warm sounds like an injection pump issue. The 98's were known to have problems with those. Go to auto zone and have them pull codes.

As for the turbo going bad like that, you'd notice it because it would make horrible noises when it contacted the housing. That thing is spinning several hundred thousand times a minute. You'll know when it hits the housing.

The cracked exhaust mainfold ain't to big a deal unless it's huge. You can buy an aftermarket one and be done with it.

Also, if I'm correct, one something goes on recall status it stays on there permanently. There are guys with 12v's that are having their throttle cable replaced under recall as we speak. For the oil leak, first clean the entire engine top to bottom. Then start it up and see if you can't pin point where the oil is leaking from. Empty the breather bottle (do a search) and see if that helps.

I have a funny feeling about your dealer. See if you can't take it to another one somewhere else. I just have a hard time believing that an engine with 150k miles on it would need that kind of work done to it.

Your signature indicates stock power. Are gauges installed? You're probably not in trouble with high EGT's. Compared to a rebuilt engine a Fass or equivalent wouldn't be much. Might be VP44 time. Depending on your schedule it might be worth your time to find a competent repair facility out of town(state). Are there any Bomb parties happening soon?

yea, its bone stock, no mods whatsoever just a rebuilt 5spd.

what is a fass? been tryin to get it into another shop to have it looked at.

just dont make sense that it would have no compression.. it runs fine, though it did only get about 10 mpg towin a 8k 27ft enclosed car trailer at about 70mph.

the turbo bein bad dont make sense either... lol. this really sucks.

had a diesel guy in the area (he sells a lot of them) say that he had a similiar problem and it was bad compression and the motor needed a rebuild. I hope this is not the case...

I have a hard time believing that the motor needs rebuilding. I'd take it to a local cummins shop first and see what they say. Not saying that these motors are invincible, but they are pretty darn close.
