I've noticed the same thing. I'll let it idle for 15 minutes, very little heat. Start pushing snow and she gets warm fast.

hey-Hey!!!,
Mine makes very little( if any ) heat until I take power out of it. The thermostat keeps the engine warm, but getting it up to temperature does not happen quickly until I am pouring heat into it. Run the numbers( heat capacity of that much Iron and water v. fuel input at idle and subtract what's going out the exhaust ). You'll get a large number of seconds...
cheers,
Douglas

I've thought about rigging up an old GM gasser fast idle solenoid and put it on a toggle switch, just for warm up. My boy has a 3rd gen and the computer kicks it up on fast idle when it's cold out, then it will idle back down when a certain temp is reached.

I used an old shower curtain rod on the throttle. It didn't make any difference. It takes 8 to 10 miles before my thermostat opens, even with the AK winter front and plugging it in.

If you change the vacuume lines on the control can behind the glove box unhook bolth lines and hook up the lite green where the dark green line was the heater will pull air from the cab instead of cold out side air. you dont need to plug the dark green line it only gets vacuume on max ac

I'm in the same boat.
I was going to put a hand throttle on it but after thinking about it all summer it's -25C again and not done.
What I've done the last 2 winters is cut a 6" long piece of 3/4"x1" wood.
I slide it behind the gas peddle under the throttle cable and it usually brings the RPM's up to around 11-1200. This gives me a WARM cab to climb into by the time I pour a cup of coffee.
I DO have not only the factory block heater but also an oil pan heater so everything is relativly warm when I start it anyway.

I've found that if you have an exhaust brake, keeping the brake on while the truck idles helps it to warm up a great deal. I know it's a great expense just for a warm truck, but it has other benefits too.

You can get magnetic oil pan heaters at places like Princess, TSC, Harbour Freight, etc. starting around $50.
