Headlight Problems

I was driving home last night in my '95, went around a corner and turned on the brights when everything went dark. Had to have a buddy drive in front of me and escort me home. Both lights just went out all at once, parking lamps and turn signals as well as brake lights still work fine. Just no head lights, low or high. Any ideas??

I had a 94 that did that. I beleive there was a recall on the turn signal switch that coused the problem since that has the high beam selector in it. You might call the dealership and have them run your vin # for recals.

Problem likely is the multifunction switch (turn signal)
I see this problem a lot on rigs where the the brights aren't used often. The open design of the bright switch allows gunk to build up causing a poor connection. Most times just spraying electronic cleaner at the base of the shaft while working the brights back and forth will cure the problem.
To prevent it in the future "exercise" the the brights every once in awhile by turning them off and on, headlights don't even need to be on.

This problem has been a pita for me latly. I replaced my headlamp switch on the dash a few months back because everything quit working. Well i used to ride around w/ just highbeams on since my lights suck. Well alot of post i read said this happened from never using higbeams so i figured the same would apply since i never used my low beams. Well i started using my lowbeams recently and it seems to be better but it did it again the other night. Now i did try replacing the turn signal combo switch and it DID NOT fix my problem. Im having the same issue you are no headlights or flickering headlights. I read that alot of people usually replace the dash headlamp switch w/ a new mopar one that comes with a new wiring harness and it usually fixes the problem.

You need to install a relay to take the load off the switch.

This way the switch will turn on/off the relay instead of having all the power for the headlights go through the switch.

Another bad dodge design, but easily fixed.

Does the headlight load go through the light switch and stalk? What does the relay under the hood do? I don't have light wiring problems, just trying to "think" like a Dodge engineer I pretty much understand GM and VW's. This is my first Chrysler for 25 years. Thanks, Artie

The light switch on my 93 smoked while I was on my way to an auction a few years ago. I couldn't turn it off, melted plastic into the works, had to pull the fuse to turn off the lights. I got a replacement from Napa. A relay is a good idea, I want to do that on my current truck but haven't found the time.

The headlight load goes through the switch. The relay will take the load off the switch.

When you wire in a relay, the switch will just be there to turn the relay on/off. No load will go through the light switch anymore.....it will go through the relay.

If you just replace the switch without doing the relay mod....it will keep melting the switches.
