Having an intermittent issue

Having some recurrences with my truck that I'm trying to iron out. It started about 6 months ago. Passing a car on the highway my truck began to defuel and refuel in a jerking manner, like on, off, on off. No codes. On occasion when idling I would hear a sort of rattle after the a/c would cycle, like a timing rattle or something with pressure. When i would hear this my truck would act up. More recently its been escalating. First get the jerking then the truck would run rough. Pulled over and the truck would not idle down. Ran rough and stayed at about 1600rpms. Turned the heater off and the truck returned to normal. No codes. Most recently was the worst yet. Driving down the highway and the gas pedal goes dead, no response from it when i would push it or let off. The truck just coasted to a stop and died. Cranked on it a few times, no crank. No codes. Checked using the key on method and the Smarty. Cleared dtcs even though none were present. Truck then started fine and has been fine ever since.

Went to the dealer to inquire about it. He said it sounded like the apps sensor, which aint cheap. I need some light shed on this issue because i can't really imagine what would cause this issue w/o tripping any codes. Please help me out guys.

Sorry for it being so long, just trying to get all the info in.

Does sound like the APPS. But usually there's a code thrown.

Timbo has a much cheaper solution for the APPS if you need one.

I have been fighting almost the same problem for over a year now! I started having the intermittent dead pedal issues, intermittent injector noises, etc like you described. Took it in for warranty SEVERAL times, dealer replaced the APPS sensor 4 times, then decided the engine ECM was bad and changed it, replaced all 6 injectors, then replaced 1 of the new injectors again. It would run ok for a short while after the repairs, then some form of the problem would come back.

I was at my wits end to say the least and was ready to sell it, as a last ditch effort I removed and cleaned EVERY electrical connector and ground in the engine compartment. I found several of the weatherpack connectors that were dirty and the grounds to the fenders were corroded.

I am happy to say I have around 1500 miles on it since I cleaned connectors and it hasn't acted up since! I'm crossing my fingers, but I feel pretty confident that my problem is fixed.

Hope this helps.

Been doing some thinking.... Anyone think this could possibly be a bad relief valve on the rail??? Could possibly explain the erratic idling and maybe dead pedal if the valve were to have been stuck.

I would put money it is your Electronic Fuel Control. Does engine surge at idle? If it does replace EFC. Might be covered under your Cummins warranty. Best call dealership and have them run your vin to make sure first.

Truck don't idle bad at all until it spazs out. It will do this about once a month now, no codes, just weird symptoms. When it doesn't do that it runs so perfect it makes me paranoid that its too good to be true. Truck runs great any other time. I'm thinking that maybe that rattling noise I hear when it happens may be the relief valve sticking open. Thing is I don't have too much money right now, so hopefully figuring it out won't cost me a fortune.

Sitting on 126k miles now, so no warranties for me....

There is a Miller tool #9013. Remove fitting from top of limiting valve and then screw this fitting in. There should be no flow of fuel from fitting. If you have access to Starscan you can run test to double check limit valve. If not just unplug FCA and there still should be NO flow. This will max out your pressure from CP3 pump so donot run truck long with this connector off.
