Has anyone repaired their starter?

Lately my truck will ignore me the first time I turn the key. A couple days ago I was leaving the bank and I tried it about 10 times before it decided to crank. I'm sure the starter is original. Has anyone repaired theirs with good results. I have seen the ads for new contacts claiming to fix these starters. Can I fix this for cheap or am I better off to buy a new one? Also, is there a difference between one for a standard and an automatic.

keep a ball peen hammer under the seat, so you can get out and whack the relay...

I do plan on really fixing it someday....

Mine was showing signs of going out, and one day it finally went out, lucky me i was at lunch and i had met my mom there, had good company until i could get a tow home .

Ended up replacing it with a new one, and with the return of the core it was not so expensive, though a couple of the main mounting bolts were a pain in the rear.

Hehehe...You don't want to rely on that one out here where it can be -6 below windchill in the morning like today...Brrrrr. Those contactor kit are reasonable, cheap in fact. You may need a 12 point 10mm sock to get the starter bolts off. I would do it for the experience of it, the hammer and the kit. Easy one.

You should see the case on the bottom of my starter... Been Peened

Get the Larry B super starter contacts that are sold in the back of magazines. I fixed my starter with these and they are like twice the contact area of stock and easy to install. I think they are like $30-$40, a little cheaper than a new starter which is over $300.

I wouldn't want to crawl under there in -6* weather either...

I thought for sure there was a article in the sticky that talked about rebuilding these starters and the sight that sold the kits.

If it's there,......I...can't find it.

My starter gave me trouble once,
took it apart, cleaned and re-lubed it
cleaned the contacts and it was good as new.

Did the rebuild on mine a few years back. Got the heavy duty contacts from Carquest for 30.00 bucks. Easy rebuild. Local starter shop told me that the bushings that the stator rode on were likely shot and it would cost me around 150.00 for them to rebuild it. When I opened it up I found that the stator rides on Timken ball bearings. I think that the brushes in these starters are the only thing that can wear out.

I've replaced many starter contacts on these trucks. It's a great starter and contacts are about the only thing that ever fails. As was mentioned they use ball bearings instead of bushings, and never seem to get noisy or sloppy. I wouldn't hesitate to spend a couple dollars on new contacts, and get another 100,000 miles out of that starter.

I think another reason these starters last so long is that they never have to turn the engine over for more than a couple seconds!!

My dad's old 6.9l ford liked to go through starters every couple years, but then again it was getting to the point where it needed starting fluid to start in +60deg weather
