Harmonic Balancer not indexed to Crankshaft?

I have pulled the Harmonic Balancer off twice now (both times for a crank seal) and I marked the balancer and the shaft and put it back on at the same spot (it can go on four different ways). The Haynes manual asks you to mark the balancer so that that goes back in the same way but the Cummins Factory manual makes no mention of marking the balancer. I think the Haynes manual is wrong in asking you to mark the balancer. Because it is a torsional damper and not a counterweight type balancer, I don't think it has to be indexed to the crank.

Could some one confirm this?

I forgot to mark mine once and just reinstalled it with no issues.

Only ones that are indexed to the crank are the CR's, and thats for the tone ring. 12v/24v can go any way you want.

Thanks, good to know.

I killed the KDP this time. Didn't know about the KDP the first time I had the timing cover off.

Smart move since the KDP can come out after 100k miles. I had two trucks in the past few month's with KDP damage. Very expensive repair when gears and cover get broken.

Inline 6's are inherently in balance. The 'balancer' only smooths the firing pulses. There is no key position.
