Hard to start!! It's getting cold out!!

It's starting to get alittle cold here in Indiana, And the dodge is not liking it. When it's about 35-40 outside, i'll turn the key on, wait to start. then crank on it. It seems to fire right away but for the first 2 seconds, it sounds like its only running on three cyclinders. Like its missing out, but then it comes out of it and is fine. Whats causing that first little "miss out" when i first start it?? It's not going to be fun when its about 10 degrees out!!- Thanks Chris

If you changed your timing - it's going to affect a cold start.

With mine (stock) I give about 1/2" of pedal travel while cranking, it usually fires in 3-4 seconds and I hold it around 800 - 1000 rpm for 30 seconds to 90 seconds depending upon the temperature. Below 15*F I cycle the heater grids twice and follow the 60 - 90 second raised-idle procedure. My truck has been started (on first attempt) at -8*F with no problems.

I forgot to say above, this is with giving it pedal. If i don't give it any pedal, it will just crank and crank with nothing. I think my timming is at 16.5 or 17 degrees?? Should i just not worry about it.
The reson i'm making a post is b/c last year it started alot better when cold out, just woundering what would cause it to be worse this year??

I'm thinking it's your supply side rubber fuel hoses. They have most likely started to crack and let tiny amounts of air in when the truck is not running. Your symptoms are dead textbook perfect for that to be the problem. And yes, it does seem to get worse the cooler it gets.

Mine does the same thing

even in fifty degree temps, i dont let it bother me too much, i have a 16.5 timing, i just give it some pedal and it fires right up. however my filters, my additives, and my lines are all good to go... once it fires up and i let it sit for a few minutes and alls well...

I did replace the hoses about a year ago, so i'm thinking that shouldn't be it. But i might as well check them.

No, this is with out plugging it in. When it is plugged in, it starts like a champ!! I just want to make sure "something" is not starting to go bad on it, and leave me stranded somewhere.

Being that this is my first winter with a diesel i was wondering about plugging it in. Do you plug it in and leave it on all night or do you just plug it in for a while before you start it?

Personally, I just plug it in when I get up in the morning and by the time that I leave it is fine. I only do that when it gets down in the teens or below though. Some use timers to start it a couple of hours early.

Some also plug it in all night. I guess it all depends on where you are and how cold it gets.

1. check shut off solenoid for full travel.

2. check idle adjustment.

3. overflow valve.

If you're not plugging in just cycle the grid heaters twice.
After the wait to start light goes out turn the key off then back on again.
After the second time the light goes out start it up.
