Handguns for home defense

It seem his neighbor fired off a couple of rounds at two strangers in the adjoining Duplex housing unit.
One of the rounds penatrated the wall, grazing the head of the 7 year old as he was watching TV.

Probably 9mm fmj....Most people just think bullets are bullets, and have no idea about KE, velocity, etc...Chalk up one more for the anti-gunners to use against us

the dumb butt next door probably thought like alot of people. the bullet just stops after it passes what you were shooting at.

handgun is not an ideal home defense weapon. i keep a .357 loaded with .38 hollow points as a backup home defense weapon. my main weapon is a remington 870 12 gauge with an 18.5" barrel, tactical grips and a surefire combat light, loaded with 00 buck. less collateral damage and nothing will walk away from it. don't get me wrong, it will still go through a wall but with less velocity than a handgun bullet.

btw, my home defence gun is a 9mm loaded with 115 Gr Hollow points, but I have a rock home and know where my kids BETTER be located if someone breaks in...

I have a Kimber Compact CDP with 230gr Ranger Talon +P+ 
High impact, but they deform and fragment quickly...Also have a shotgun...I dont have to wory about neighbors either....That guy should been shooting a shotgun, but if he insisted on using a handgun, he should have had some subsonic hollow points...He may have been OK then...

Hovisimo, I agree with the twelve, but not the 00 buck. They penetrate thru sheet rock too easily. I use hi brass 6's. At close range they are just as deadly and they will stay in the house. Even if they get past a window their energy is lost before they do any real harm. I live in a plastic coated cardboard house. (vinyl siding, gypsum, sheetrock) A .22 can hit the neighbors cat from inside. IMHO

My home defense gun is a 9mm Glock19 with FMJ. My carry gun is a Glock29 w/ full power 165g 10mm rounds. I'm looking to find a nice 870 w/ rifled barrel and such, which will be the G19's big-brother.

First of all, I'm glad to hear that the boy is still alive. He got lucky.
Could have been 9mm, but most any FMJ will easily penetrate walls (unless they are brick...but some will go through brick). This is ONE of the main reasons people should keep JHP rounds loaded if they intend to use the gun for self defense.
I agree that a shotgun is a better self defense weapon than a handgun, but as you said, they will STILL go through walls AND people (especially buckshot). With either gun, you have to always be aware of what is behind your target.
You indirectly brought up a good point....HAVE A PLAN. My wife knows exactly what to do if someone ever breaks into our home. But, even if you have a plan, things don't always happen the way we planned them. You have to be prepared to react accordingly. Expect the worst and hope for the best.
Our house and the neighbors houses around us are all brick. That being said, I keep a Glock 22 loaded with 165 grain Speer Gold Dots in a quick access safe that is bolted to my nightstand and a Remington 870 with the plug removed loaded with 00 buck (with 5-6 more shells stuck in a side saddle shell holder). The shotgun stays at the house and the Glock goes wherever I go.
