Had A Runaway

I had just got my truck back from the shop, with a new hotrod pump from one of the big guys....

Anyway the repair shop road tested it and also put it on the dyno (which did 438 /1012 on a stock clutch) before I went to pick it up. I drove it for maybe 10 miles out of town.

Ok here's where the fun starts, running about 60-65mph and we come to a passing lane so I give it some go pedal to get around this car in front of me...
Imagine my surprise when I decided to get out of it only to find that it was stuck wide open Well the car that I just passed got a good smoke show while I tried to get it shut down. I just put it in 5th and held the brake to get it to a stop.

After looking everything over we pulled the intake to block off the turbo and I cranked it over only to have it take start to take off again. I just shut it down with the key before it could get too far.

Could this be a stuck rack or???? and it has a 4k GSK, with a #10 plate.

Have you had the throttle cable recall done on it? You might check and make sure that your linkage isn't sticking. Mine did that before I had it replaced.

Yeah it wasn't the throttle cable, everything checked out fine and is returning. pedal doesn't feel stiff or bound up either.....

Sounds like something is up with the GSK. Maybe one of the keepers came off.. I would start there first.

Being stuck wide open and having a runaway are two very different things............sounds like something in the pump is stuck in WOT. Not a runaway.

Runaway will blow past the governed engine speed until either the ungoverened fuel source is removed or air is shut off.......or like you did and stalled the engine with load.

Or parts scatter........whichever comes first. I had a Detroit take off on a engine stand one time(running on its engine oil) I fed it my winter coat and it never even slowed down, it ran at god knows what rpm till the parts flew. I still have nightmares and wet the bed because of that ole 2cycle demon.

Oh 10-4, I forgot to put that in.......it'll stop (probably) when you get a rod hanging out the block.............

But I had an 8v-92 with a broken rod and plastered piston in a seizmic machine........ it started up and drove into the shop........ the power of the 8v-92 still freaks me out.

sorry for the highjack...................

a mechanic i know was working on a 2 stroke detroit and had it run away on him and he panicked and stuck his hand over the turbo b/c he had nothing else around!!! he had a big ol' hickey on the palm of his hand, crazy. word of advice...don't stick hands over turbo inlets!

i apologize for the hijack too.

Sounds like something in your Goveroner is stuck , if a barrel/plunger ceased , then you would not have been able to shut the truck off with the key, as the fuel rack would be stuck at full fuel due to the ceased plunger (in which case it WOULD be a runaway of sorts)

.......buddies lucky he still has his fingers

A runaway is defined as when an engine begins running on an unregulated fuel source bypassing the governor. So take it for what it is.........stuck at full fuel is not a runaway.

I had a Cat C7 Accert in a brandnew highway coach runaway.......it burned all the oil in the pan in about 25 seconds and in that time it hit 5700RPM. it only stopped because it ran out of engine oil to burn. Oil seal went out of the turbo shaft and pulled all the engine oil into the intake throught the blown shaft seal.

that's true and theoretically if it was at full fuel it should be able to run all day like that (well maybe not all day) but for a long time anyway...

Thumbs down Runaways

Had a New 79 Olds Diesel Cutlass Wagon back in the day. Had it loaded with Momma, sleeping kids and lugagge. I was doing about seventy five in cruise down a pretty good hill. All the sudden when coming up the other side after cruise control went to full throttle it stayed there. Topping the hill at 95 I killed the cruise, no help. Only option was to turn off key and muscle beast to side of the road where it started and ran normally (sleeping wife & kids). Afterwards I saw where the throttle plate had got stuck, slightly overtravel, in the intake. A good cleaning took care of the problem. Biggest piece of head-gasket blowing junk that Detroit ever sold. I am still waiting on my warranty re-imbursements

A stuck plunger holding the rack at full fuel IS a runaway, as you said , it is bypassing the goveroner, the only way to shut it down is to cut off the air.

That's why the 2 stroke detroits with non spring loaded racks had air shutoffs on the blower , there was no way to shut it down in the event that one injector plunger ceased, It would hold all the injectors in the same position that the one had ceased, It was a runaway.

I don;t think so. if it doesn't excede goverened RPM it hasn't ran away.
