H1 Wheels...

Alright, it is time for some new tires and with the current state of my wheels I either have to sandblast them and paint them or I need to get some new ones. As always the $ is tight. There are several Hummer H1 wheels listed on ebay for pretty cheap. Anyone see this done on a 1st gen.? I searched the archives and found some people talking about H2 wheels where they had to machine the centers. Is this needed on the H1 wheels. I would love some input....

Thanks in advance!

H1 rims have a 7.5" backspace. They're 16.5 x 8.25 with a magnesium OR rubber insert. Its the backspace thats the killer.

Most guys either re-center them OR use a dually front diff to offset that and either put 4" spacers in the rear or just bolt the rears on and leave it narrow, Which IMO looks goofy, but works fine. and my experience is with GM trucks of this vintage, which shouldn't make much difference.

BTW you don't need to machine the H2 centers.....yes they need to be opened up but not neccisarrily by a machine shop. I did my H2 by hand with a pnematic die grinder and an aluminum bit or you can use a holesaw in a drill. H2 rims are lug centric.......not hub centric.

Running 4" spacers seems like a bad idea and recentering them sounds like $$. H2 wheels sound easier, no problems with the backspacing there?

I have been looking for someone that has tried this, the H1 or other deep backspaced wheels on a 1st gen dually. I am tired of the dually, and am looking for some way to convert to SRW with my exsisting axles. Has anyone actually run this combo?

Anyone know how much wider a dually rear is compared to a standard?
