growling noise when getting on it? loud! help!!
tonight i got on my truck a little bit and the thing was growling so i took it easy until i got home and then bagged on it in the driveway. i put it in 4 wheel and it growls it sounds kinda like when you bark the turbo but it is definitly not that!!!!! could it be a u joint going bad or low on gear oil? i havent checked either yet i just want to know what your guys opinions are
i just got done changing the coolant today and after i started it up it had a weird smell to it for a while? could i have blown a line or something for the trans heat exchanger causing it to dump into the trans? the trans seems a little overfull but i think it was a half quart overfull when i changed it last because the dipstick is so impercise. anyway anyone else have this problem i will check the diffs in the morning and go from there it almost sounded like the transfercase was making a noise like when you cant get it in like the older trucks. thanks for the help!

u joint would be a good place to start. They seem to go bad quite often. I had a similar problem, changed the ujoints and it was still there. I ended up having the rear end rebuilt at 50k, bearings were wasted.

checked all the fluid levels and such all were good not over full power steering is fine rear diff didnt have much metal on the magnet either did the front so i am eliminating that as a possible cause.
Do these transfercases ever have to be adjusted like the linkage it really sounded like it was coming from the drivers side right underneath me so i dont know u joints are all tight
the coolant was a little low in the radiator i just flushed it yesterday! will the truck burp and make a loud noise like a growling if that were the case?
i havent driven it since last night so ill take it out today i ajusted the tv cable on the trans on saturday maybe it was to tight causing so much pressure so i loosened it back up a little we'll see

Not true. You should be able to spin one and the other will spin in the opposite direction. They should NOT spin in the same direction at the same time.

Yes, park does lock the transmission, but it does not lock the rear end. The driveshaft will not turn, but if you jack up the rear end so that BOTH tires are off the ground, you will be able to spin one and the the other will spin in the opposite direction. This is possible because of the spider gears in the differential. The driveshaft still will not turn. Now, if you only jacked up one side, you would not be able to turn it because the other side will not turn AND the transmission is locked, preventing the driveshaft from rotating. If this doesn't make sense, maybe someone else can explain it better than I did.

Unless he's got a limited slip rear... the tires will spin relatively freely.

I thought these newer ones used a gear type limited slip not a clutch style like the old ones. I say this because my window sticker shows adder for limited slip and I can turn the wheels and work the spider gears with both in the air and the driveshaft locked like it was an open differential. Also see the owners manual saying limited slip might not work if one wheel is on very slippery surface like ice and that we must apply a little parking brake to get the LS differential to lock and transmit torque to the wheel with traction. Anyone confirm this??
