Grinding sound downshifting from 3rd (5-speed auto)

I've noticed when I let off the gas suddenly while under load (climbing a hill with my 5th wheel, then the light turns red, for instance), the transmission seems to grind gears going from 3rd back to 1st. I'm just guessing at what the transmission is doing, of course. Anyone ever heard this? It happens fairly rarely, and not at all if I remember to let off the gas a little slower so it goes through 2nd on the way.

Thanks for the great forum... I was never very mechanically inclined, but am learning to do more of my own maintenance thanks to this fantastic resource.
