Grid heater solenoid part number
Not even my dealer parts dept. can find it. How do they stay in business? Mounts by the passenger side battery tray and controls the grids. I cant find anything online with a part number. I've look under grid heater relay/solenoid. Thanks

can you pull the relay out , look for p/n it looks to be a standard relay . there is a fuse link, in the wire, check for output. you maybe able to swap the relay, with another unit, out of the fuse box.

I remember the one for the 2nd gen trucks being 56026842. Not sure if the part was different on the 3rd gens or not. I actually had it printed up under the lid of my toolbox because it was always such a PITA for the partsman to find.

that relay does not fail very often, there is a fuse link between the battery and the relay. disconnect the control wire from the ecm and jumper from the battery to the relay control post you should hear the relay snap. next see if you have 12 volts on each terminal on top. if none on either the link is open if on one the relay is bad

one more thing, you do not need the grid heaters. most of us remove them. the truck will start at 20* below zero with out them. they are a emission item

I will check the relay. I was told the solenoid was sticking open causing the drain and then overcharging of the passenger side battery (smoked one and melted the terminal). It's disconnected now and is not draining the battery anymore but is causing the engine light to come on and throwing a code saying "no voltage drop seen at the grid heaters." Thanks for the feedback.

Use a continuous duty rated camper solenoid like they used on Camper Specials way back. they have lots of amperage capacity to do this job and they are only about $20-$30 and they never wear out. Also, from time to time, I run some WD40 spray on items like this under the hood then wipe it with a cloth. Moisture still migrates everywhere and plays havoc with electrical parts over time. I also lightly spray all the wiring connection plugs before washing under the hood -same reason.

if you do not wait to start the code will never throw. it works funny, the wait to start light will always come on to train you to wait to start. above 55* the heaters are never cycled. once it is cooler than 55* the ecm looks for a drop in voltage during the wait to start time. if you start the truck as soon as you turn the key on the code will never throw. none of the industrial 5.9's have the heater and the no heater cummins piece is 3922484 i think it is about $22. here is a pix of a heater being removed from a stock one and a stock one next to it

the biggest problem is the connectors to the relay, they are not very positive.... i found on mine , if i crimped them a little it tightened them right up and no more codes
