I spent a lot of time reading these forums trying to clear up this knocking problem, the dealer hadn't been much help. Fuel treatment seems to be improving the problem. First I tried Diesel Kleen and it didn't do much to reduce the knocking. Then I tried Howes Mean Cleaner, it helped but I could still hear the knock. Next was Red Line Diesel Catalyst and it has proved to work the best for me. You can buy Red Line at Auto Zone and I would suggest you try it, it has worked for me. Run about 3 clean up doses (one bottle for 20 gallons)to clean the injectors.
My truck also sounds different depending on which fuel I buy. I had been using WalMart, Shell, and various truck stop fuels and the truck sounded like crap. I started buying fuels at different stations trying to find out if that would make a difference. My truck runs noticable better, smoother and quieter when I run Citgo Prem. Diesel. Citgo is the only location in my area I have found fuel that is labeled as premium....I don't know what is different about this formulation but it definately helped my truck. I ran Citgo Prem for a couple of tanks then switched back to Shell, then back to Citgo to make sure my suspicions about fuel quality were correct.
I will use fuel treatment in every tank and Citgo fuel from this point forward. Most of my trips are 15 miles less so I will probably do run a clean up dose every few tanks with a maintenance dose of fuel treatment in the others. I have also seen an increase in fuel mileage with the Red Line and Citgo. My overhead is usually within .5 of hand calculations. A trip from Memphis to Little Rock and back last week showed over 22 mpg with the cruise set on 73 mph. The best previous hand calculation was about 20.5 mpg.
